Wok In The Clouds, Connaught Place, New Delhi: Decor

On the first floor (no lift) is this space that gives the impression of being underwater, thanks to the shade of aqua in the side panels. Wok in the Clouds is a venerable, path-breaking brand that started out in West Delhi (Rajouri Garden and Punjabi Bagh) where it is considered a byword for consistency and taste. Its foray to a brand new market in Connaught Place has this brand hastily reinventing itself. Is it a good idea? Yes, as Connaught Place is a new market with a hitherto unexplored customer base. What I saw was a variety of customers – obviously tourists – who would probably not venture into Punjabi Bagh but who want to enjoy Indian food anyway. The style of service in a traditional Indian eatery is a bowl of food that serves four persons. After you have ordered 2 or 3 portions, you are done. Wok in the Clouds offers you single portion servings with a side dish and breads.

Wok In The Clouds, Connaught Place, New Delhi: Food

After feasting on their chilli chicken from the Punjabi Bagh outlet for years, courtesy a friend who lives in the neighborhood and orders take-away regularly, it was a shock to find that this perennial favorite was missing from the menu. What was there, however, included chilli garlic prawns (₹ 575) with Shanghai sauce. Crumbed, butterflied prawns that were deep-fried and served with a sauce with oriental seasonings. Chicken tikka makhani (₹ 525) is actually a meal in a platter for one person: boneless butter chicken (not the same recipe as the Punjabi Bagh original) with two butter naans and a small bowl of dal makhni. A useful meal that contains all the ‘food groups’ of a bygone age where ghee-laden food was considered the epitome of good hospitality and did not have health implications. Personally, I would have preferred a less oily option. The dal was rich and creamy and the meal was satisfying for a large appetite. Dahi pakodi (₹ 95) was a well-priced side order. Sukka mutton (₹ 525), served with ‘khatti’ dal and ‘Malabari’ parotta needs to be urgently reworked: there was no resemblance to any preparation of the southern states.

Plus & Minus:

Trendy interiors with a culture-neutral appearance. The vegetarian section is rather unappealing across cuisines and there is no snack menu for in-between meal times.
