Unplugged Courtyard, Chowringhee, Kolkata: Decor

This is for real. The pandemic has pushed all boundaries to create a new genre of food. The new world order is pushing for maximizing everything at the given moment, this includes enormous amounts of food being downloaded under a single roof, on a single menu to engross every moment of the eating experience. What if tomorrow never comes? I simply call it an overlap of sensibility. But you may call me old fashioned; the subtle refinements in our classic art of dining is losing its charm rapidly to loud, know-all, demand-all and must-have-all attitude. Whether it is biryani or bouillabaisse, who cares about seasons, time of the day or palates, given an unfair chance can just fit into the box amicably next to each other. Mandatory openness in the ambience, is been taken too seriously to push openness of the mind, imagination and even appetites. Welcome to Unplugged Courtyard, the new age rooftop restobar comprising all levels of ‘food entertain-ment’; indoor, outdoor loungish feel, picturesque vantage, fluidity of day and night buzz, tweak of a hand-crafted cocktail bar.

Unplugged Courtyard, Chowringhee, Kolkata: Food

A ‘gluttonesque’ menu comprises everything under the sun! From delicate sushi platters to robust pastas to spicy Turkish kebabs, not to miss the regional diversity of Indian traditions like the Laal maas ki Lahori seekh with walnut labneh, no they have not spared anything. We’re thankful in some way that they are open for both dine in and delivery. We jump tracks to catch up on geographical speed with Korean barbecue chicken salad (Rs.  220), Pizza margherita (Rs. 460), Turkish Kebab Platter (Rs. 880) and Chocolate Bread (Rs. 425) for dessert.

Plus & Minus:

Our aggregator door delivery lands up minutes before scheduled time earning extra brownie points. Plastics galore, ordinary bags and boxes bring the food home alright and a large card-board pizza box. The fulsomeness of the thin crust Margherita pizza, with blobs of melted bocconcini and slivers of basil looks inviting for the first bite. But the bite mars the high notes. It is kind of limp from travel and needs instant damage control. My five minutes remedy of popping into the toaster oven perks up life and zest into the pizza. Did you know that the Koreans fawned over avocados? I didn’t. According to Forbes magazine, ‘the bumpy skin fruit is exploding in popularity in South Korea’ and Korea’s avocado imports increased by 61% in 2020 to tc 13,000 tonnes. No wonder our Korea BBQ chicken salad lands up with a dainty sliced seasonal avocado topping. It loaded with cashew nuts, cherry tome toes, Kalamata olives, layers of dice Korean barbecue chicken, crispy fried noodles and lettuce tossed in sweet and tangy dressing — the unfamiliarity of some ingredients is doused in the dressing, losing crunchy freshness and character, the dressing should definitely come separately. The Turkish kebab platter is a game changer! It lifts the mood playing notes of the palate with lavishness of flavours. Fragrant, char grilled colored peppers, laced with chunky pieces of traditional chicken and lamb Sis kebabs and spiced up ground mince skewers of both chicken and Iamb Adana kebab, from the south eastern Turkish provinces win our hearts. Add to that ample dips of Hummus, Baba ghanouj, Haydari, pickled veggies, with soft pita and crusty Lavesh. And finally, the Chocolate cake comes in double aluminium foil with melted vanilla ice cream bath and handwritten instructions to heat 60 seconds before consumption. Thank God for small wonders, ice cream sacrificed, the heat brings out the gooey warmth of dark molten chocolate lava from the heart of the sponge.’
