Theobroma, Sector 9, Chandigarh: Decor

I must confess the anticipated parking woes at Sector 9’s inner market tend to keep me away from its attractions. The other day, however, I espied the trademark confection colours of a Theobroma as I drove past, and had to stop. I’ve been a longstanding devourer of their fudgy brownies and mava cakes since they first introduced Mumbai to the ‘food of the gods’ (Theobroma translated from Greek) some 20 years ago. They are now a pan-India chain boasting 150 outlets, including three in the Tricity. The cheery bakery has a smattering of seating along one length, should you wish to grab a coffee, like I did, to wash down a very inviting lemon tart.

Food:

Theobroma’s product range has also expectedly grown; their repertoire now includes pastries, desserts, cookies, breads, and savouries. A recent tea-time family gathering, cobbled together at short notice, gave me ample opportunity to try out their nosh at leisure. I scrolled through a rather mouthwatering menu and ordered home some of their signature offerings–an assortment of brownies and pastries, their Chicken Keema Pull Apart Bread, Chicken Seekh Kebab Rolls, and Chicken Ham and Cheese Danish.

Plus & Minus:

The brownies were divine; intensely chocolate-rich, dense and gooey, especially the walnut and millionaire brownies with their shiny and crackly crust. Of the pastries, the Pineapple was an instant hit, fresh, moist and a throwback to friendly neighbourhood bakeries back in the day. The cake and mousse layered Opium Pastry was quite delightful too, if you don’t mind OD-ing on chocolate. The savouries, just as popular that evening, were gobbled up in a jiffy. All of them were freshly baked, rightly flavoured, and generously filled. Apart from the seekh kebab roll which was baked with spicy mint chutney, the keema bread and flaky Danish came mildly spiced. I can foresee many a visit (it’s worth the jostle!) or doorstep delivery for more of the same.
