The Marina, Indiranagar, Bangalore: DECOR
The restaurant-opening spree in Indiranagar seems far from over. This new place has come up on 100 Feet Road where the old Tangerine used to be all those years ago. It’s a neat restaurant, with clean lines and a muted colour palette. There’s some seating in an open courtyard and a bar area which is awaiting the wine licence before they can start pouring. The focal point of the space is the seafood display with an array of fish and shellfish on a bed of ice. In a little glass cube, live crabs slowly move their claws.
The Marina, Indiranagar, Bangalore: FOOD
It’s all about the snapper, seer fish, squid and prawns here, though the menu includes options for vegetarians and also some chicken dishes. You choose your fish from the display they are labelled with prices per 100 gm — and can have it cooked in any of the styles listed on the menu or customized the way you like. The large fish have to be bought whole. My pick was a medium-sized grouper and I had it cooked two ways. The South Indian-style Tawa Fry worked well, the spicy masala complementing the subtleness of the fish. I liked even more the fish steamed in a Tom Yum sauce, which was hot and fragrant and topped with fresh herbs. The dish exudes a delightful broth which should be eaten with some plain rice.
I also tasted Amritsari Prawns, marinated in yogurt and ajwain and tandoor-cooked.The prawns were moist, infused with the tangy marinade. The Pepper Grill prawns were a lighter version from the Western selection, flavoured delicately with lemon juice, olive oil and pepper.
After the appetizers, we had prawns in a Pepper Roast Masala with parota. I had expected a dark masala with a strong pepper hit, but this one was mild and the gravy creamy. The Malabar Fish Biryani left me underwhelmed; the fish didn’t appear to have been cooked with the rice and the entire dish left a slightly bitter aftertaste.
For dessert, it was a Tres Leches which, here, was chocolate-flavoured. The Elaneer Payasam was flawless.
The Marina, Indiranagar, Bangalore: SERVICE
Service is friendly, but my orders were rushed and dishes that should have followed one after another arrived all at once.
The Marina, Indiranagar, Bangalore: PLUS AND MINUS
The seafood is fresh and of good quality. Some of the preparations are excellent, others less so.
