The Kylin Experience, Greater Kailash 1 (GK1), New Delhi: DECOR

Dark grey walls with exposed brick patches in parts gives the first floor — the subject of this review a smart appeal. A few touches are heartwarming: all the sofa seating rests on wooden ‘platforms’ which have one plug point per table. It is a small but rather thoughtful touch in favor of the customer whose cellphone battery is running low – many people do not like to give their phones to be charged at an out-of-sight spot. The other thing is that while nothing on the menu purports to be organic, they are trying to bypass gluten in as many of their sauces wherever practicable. So one salad could have had an olive oil and lime juice salad with galangal and lime leaf in it to imitate Asian tastes, but without the gluten in soy.

The Kylin Experience, Greater Kailash 1 (GK1), New Delhi: FOOD

The menu is relatively small and fuss-free. There is sushi which I did not try, dim sums of which I had the chicken one (Rs. 345). It is not a very difficult preparation to get right, and Kylin’s version was rather middle of the road: the chicken could have been hand chopped and rather juicier than it was. Teppanyaki sole fish in Thai herbs (Rs. 595) was pleasant enough – coconut milk napped the slices of fish, though it did not appear to have come from a teppanyaki grill – it could have been pan tossed, just as easily. The stand-out dish was green quinoa salad (Rs. 595) which, in addition to being sensationally attractive, tasted fresh with oriental overtones, thanks to a house made sauce. There were slices of avocado, steamed spinach, cherry tomatoes, assorted garden fresh greens, tender and flavorful, uncooked spinach and corn kernels all arranged around a timbale of quinoa. Not even the range of signature bowl meals came close. Bibibop bowl — a made- up name, like all the others — had overtones of Singapore, Thailand, Japan or Korea, though the names and the ingredients were meant to be indicative rather than authentically representative of the country.
