This book-lined, cozily-lit space, Chandigarh’s first book café, doubles up as a co-working space, and comes with a clever menu with punny book-themed names for dishes. It has seen several book launches, art exhibitions, and live music gigs since it first threw its doors open for bibliophiles, foodies, and coffee enthusiasts, in the year 2017. I’m known to swing by every once in a while for a cuppa and cheesecake or quick bite, and have noticed The Hedgehog Cafe has gradually taken on a much-thumbed feel, like a comforting book one rarely tires of re-reading.

My recent visit earlier this month, was an extended catch-up with friends and included several rounds of coffee, The Friendly Toast and The Don Corn for starters, or Preface, as the menu has it. We found the Light Club under Chapter 4, The Suitable Pao tucked deep inside Chapter 8 titled Munch-Tantra Tales. The Afterword (dessert) was left for another day. Besides, those cinnamon-flavoured chocolate edged, hedgehog-shaped cookies they hand out with coffee are the perfect low-on-sugar substitute for yours truly. Did I mention they’re my guilty pleasure?
Plus & Minus:
Our order came around within a short waiting period, was pleasingly plated, and of adequate proportions. All the dishes we ordered were well-made and tasty, and while I relished the juicy tomatoes loaded toast, it was the mildly spiced and cheesy corn dip, accompanied by a choice of breads, that held my attention long. The veggie club sandwich had a generous filling of cheese, came with a large portion of fries, and was gobbled up post haste. The cheekily named pao dish was the welcome surprise that afternoon–bite-sized soya chunks coated with yummy masaledar flavours and the softest paos oozing butter. The service is generally prompt, the staff friendly without being intrusive. See you there someday.
