The Fat Boy – TFB – has an interesting story. It was named by Raman Singh’s wife and partner, Randeep, because he is the quintessential fat boy. And he loves pizza, which is the second Chennai favourite, after… biryani!
The Fat Boy, Alwarpet, Chennai: Decor
They have over 40 varieties of pizza. Most of them are displayed on their custom-printed, brown, double-layered box. If you’re getting it delivered, like I did, the pizza inside is circled on the box that has the names and emojis displayed. There was really no confusion. Except that these pizzas go with dedicated dips, which arrived in small containers with single letter labels. For example, P is for pesto.
The Fat Boy, Alwarpet, Chennai: Food
B is for Blue Cheese Dip — meant to be had with Buffalo Chicken Wings (or potato). It is a well-thought-out idea, arrived at after many trials. While the ‘Buffalo’ part includes a rather sharp sauce with a hint of sweetness, the Blue Cheese Dip brings flavor and smooths down any overt edges the sauce might evoke. I had the potato version — baby potatoes, halved, deep fried and tossed in the sauce. They had their skins on and some were smashed flat into even cooking. I found out my Tom Boy pizza is supposed to be had with the Sriracha and Mayo Dip. The way I figured it out was because of the colour, and hey, it had an ‘S’ marked on the lid. This was a first. Turned out, this dip did add a new dimension. I liked the glimmer of garlic and the fibre of artichoke. The bright red paprika slivers look like they mean some serious pungent business, but are actually milder than expected.
Jazzy Boy is their signature. Even before opening the box, the aroma of truffle oil is pure temptation! But first, I heated it as instructed. On a hot tawa with the lid on. Then, I turned off the flame and added rocket leaves and sprinkled parmesan cheese on. Jazzy Boy did not disappoint on that score. And it came out aces on the taste front. Mozzarella, mushroom, sun-dried tomatoes, thyme and hints of rosemary needed no dips.
A large triangle christened Theobroma was dessert. The textures and layers were on point, but the sweetness was a tad overpowering — pushing all luscious chocolate flavors into the background. If only there was some way to layer the dessert with mildly sweetened cake separating the chocolate, it would actually be easier on the palate.
Plus & Minus:
They have come a long way, thanks to the dedication to quality and paying attention to valuable customer feedback.
