Balle balle! Punjab sings, dances and serves up its robust bounty on the 4th floor of a Bandra mall. Never mind if the lift is too tiny or some escalators don’t work. Go up and wham!
Taste Of Punjab, Linking Road, Bandra West, Mumbai: Decor
Walk into a colorful, noisy, bustling space. Are they selling Punjabi juttis (shoes) in that corner? Is that bhangra being performed on the small stage? And is that a lifelike statue of a horse? Are some of the tables actually old sewing machines? And are some of the guests dancing, too? Yes. Yes. The fun spirit of Punjab is in every detail. “Punjabi bolo toh haath upar” and such like sayings adorn the walls. Sachin Jawale, the hospitable CEO, is always around and ensures that this family restaurant continues to rock.
Taste Of Punjab, Linking Road, Bandra West, Mumbai: Food
It’s a buffet-only restaurant. With many a live counter… chaat, jalebi, malpua and more.A full bar, too.Stand at the chaatcounter to get the chaat made to your taste, but have very little because there is a feast in store. Before you begin the buffet, the starters are served on your table ( five veg and five non-veg). We enjoyed the succulent kebabs more than the deep fried starters.
The generous buffet is laid out along the walls… Before you pick up anything, walk by and check out what’s served up. The menu changes but when we were there, the highlights of the generous buffet were the Punjabi Kadhi (not usually served in restaurants), which had a perfect balance of tang and creamy yet light texture, and made using the authentic recipe, the sarson da saag with white butter (full marks for that) creamy chicken. There’s plenty for vegetarians. Roti, naan are served hot on the table. Save some space to walk to the jalebi counter and wallop them garma garam.
Taste Of Punjab, Linking Road, Bandra West, Mumbai: Minus Point
The entry through the dimly lit mall is a put-off. As is the climb up to the fourth floor. The tiny boxed in lifts are either full or not working. And the unfortunate part is that even one of the escalators was not working. While the sheer number of dishes is a plus point,an overload of masala in some make them avoidable. Watery rabdi and firni need a lot more texture and creaminess.
Taste Of Punjab, Linking Road, Bandra West, Mumbai: My Point
This is a family restaurant in every sense of the term. Eat, drink, dance (the bhangra, gidda) together. Amazing value for money (see prices below)… unlimited lunch and dinner buffets. Don’t go expecting refined gourmet fare, or looking for a quiet meal… and ladies please wear flats… in case the lifts are not working. But all the better to dance in. Balle! Balle!
