Someone once said, “A purposeful silence is always better than meaningless voices.” And Talking Hands, a new restaurant at The Plaza in Begumpet is giving an all-new meaning to the age-old adage.
An initiative by TKM Sandeep, a hearing-impaired CEO of Deaf Enabled Foundation (DEF) and the Government of Telangana, the restaurant is a first-of-its-kind in the city to be run and managed entirely by hearing-impaired staffers.
Being in line with the name of the joint, sign, hand language and facial expressions are the only mode of com munication between guests and staff in the restaurant. Surprised? Read on.
Talking Hands, Begumpet, Hyderabad: DECOR
The moment we entered the restaurant, silence and a few heartfelt smiles welcomed us. For the first time, without saying a word, our smiles conveyed the message that we need a table. The interiors looked basic and comforting. From table mats to restaurant’s walls, everything is designed in a way to guide the patrons how to communicate through sign language. It’s all about making silence do the talking and unknowingly, we got immersed in learning how to communicate without speaking.
Talking Hands, Begumpet, Hyderabad: FOOD
Though menu is an essentially multicuisine one, what immediately strikes an onlooker is how the menu card is designed keeping in mind specific signs differentiating veg and non-veg courses. It was very interesting to learn how regular dishes can be ordered through sign language. For starters we ordered Chinese Chicken Roast and Hara Bara Kebab.
The deep-fried chicken roast was crispy from outside and juicy inside. The subtleness of spinach, green peas and mashed potatoes combined with spicy green chillies made this humble kebab a delightful snack.
Moving on to the main course, we tried the Chatpata Chicken and Vegetable Angara Curry with Masala Kulcha, Butter naan and roti. The tangy and spicy chicken preparation had the right balance and went well with the butter Naans. The Angara curry had mixed vegetables in tomato gravy and the right mix of masalas augmented its flavor. They serve no-fuss simple desserts comprising both warm and cold treats.
