Sriracha, Lavelle Road, Bangalore: DECOR

Singkong at UB City has been transformed into Sriracha. It’s still a pan-Asian restaurant, but there’s a new menu and the space has been given a makeover, too. Contemporary Asian design elements have been woven in to create the ambience. There’s a mural across one wall, with imagery that combines the traditional and the currently trendy, reflecting the approach the Sriracha menu takes as well. While the indoor space is nicely appointed, the outdoor deck overlooking the UB City piazza has the best seats. Evenings, especially on weekends, see the buzz of Sanchez next door spill over to Sriracha, making it a night spot and dining destination rolled into one. Open all day, it’s also a pleasant place for a light repast of dim sum and jasmine tea in-between meal times.

The menu is the creation of the enthusiastic Chef Vikas Seth, who also manages Sanchez next door. So, if it’s table-side Guacamole at the Mexican restaurant, here, it’s Som Tam, made live in a lasun – the wooden pestle-and-mortar that Chef Vikas has brought down from Bali. Shreds of raw papaya, raw mango, long beans, cherry tomatoes, chillies and soy sauce (because fish sauce may not go down well with all diners) are gently pounded together and given a zesty touch with some nontraditional grapefruit segments. The salad is served, topped with crushed peanuts and crisp-fried garlic slivers – it is delicious. The Oriental Pot Roasted Chicken and Banana Blossom Salad is another good choice from the salad menu and is served in a banana blossom sheath.

From the dim sum menu, I would recommend the vegetarian Wild Mushroom Purple Dumpling -the casing getting its colour from an extract of red cabbage – which is finished with a drizzle of truffle oil. The Roasted Duck & Plum Dumpling with its slight sweetness also makes a tasty morsel.

The Sriracha menu is expansive and the salads and dim sum are followed by appetizers, such as Togarashi Dusted Sriracha Prawns with house mayo, and Thai Steamed Fish, the fish glazed with a sticky black bean sauce.

Vegetarians have such choices as Rock Corn and Pandan Leaf Wrapped Spice Cottage Cheese, which takes the ubiquitous paneer and puts an Oriental twist on it. There’s a vast array of main courses that follows, but I tied up my meal with the Khow Suey, which came with all the varied condiments, and very good it was, too.

There’s a separate menu for sushi, featuring Maki and Nigiri rolls. You can order what they call a Sushi Boat – a selection of perfectly-crafted sushi that arrives on your table in a wooden craft. Desserts are serious business at Sriracha and there’s a super-rich Sumatra Dark Chocolate Mousse and an elaborately constructed Soft Centred Coconut Mousse Petit Gateau. But after a meal here, my choice would be the Seasonal Fresh Fruits and Jello served over shaved ice, Malaysian-style, accompanied by a little jug of condensed milk. To drink, you can order from the wine list or have a cocktail infused with Oriental spices.

I’ve found the service smooth and efficient on all my trips to Sriracha. The bar team is especially energetic.

The setting is splendid and much of the food is exceptional. I did find, though, the quality of the sushi vary on my different visits.
