Sotally Tober, Residency Road, Bangalore: Decor
There are some of us who have fond memories of Pub World, along with several other pubs of that vintage, and felt a pang when the place shut down. Sotally Tober has come up on the same spot on Residency Road. It’s a completely different vibe now, with an open, airy feel to it. I sat outdoors, under a glass roof with lots of greenery around. The music was too loud, but they did turn it down when we asked them to.

Sotally Tober has built a reputation for its cocktails. There are in-house creations such as the Sulaimani (whisked tea, tequila and tea) and Wiseman’s Sour (Irish, Scotch and American, with foamy citrus sour). They make a decent fist of the classics, but the Old Fashioned wasn’t the best I’ve had.
Though this is a buzzing bar, the food is a very good reason to go to Sotally Tober. Craving something comforting and uncomplicated, I ordered Chicken Cutlets. Served with a tomato mustard relish, they were superb. The SoTo Pork Belly, with its Asian spicing and a rum marinade, was also very good.
From the vegetarian appetizers, I had the SoTo Mushrooms on Toast — the mushrooms being sauteed with a touch of white wine. I would also recommend the Tandoori Broccoli and Cauliflower. The starter that left me unimpressed was the Goat Sukkah, which had a rank fattiness to it that wasn’t altogether appetizing.
For main course, I went utterly local and had the Rava Fried Mackerel (a fresh, boneless fillet) which came with Kerala curry sauce, red rice and a crunchy beans poriyal. A simple home-style meal of fish fry, rice and curry had been transformed into something fairly sophisticated and very tasty here. My companion had the Grilled Chicken Steak and absolutely loved it. One doesn’t expect the best desserts in bars, but Sotally Tober surprised me with a gorgeous Carrot Halva served with whiskeyed rabdi. This is Sotally Tober, after all.
