Sorted Delicatessen, Kalyani Nagar, Pune: Decor
Sorted Delicatessen is spread over a large space in a quiet corner of Kalyani Nagar. The decor is simple yet contemporary. The large display counter showcasing desserts, cookies, breads and commonly used ingredients like amaranth, quinoa and buckwheat complements the theme of the space. The ‘meet our ingredients’ board is a great informative addition. With an open kitchen, you can catch a glimpse of your food, accompaniments and garnishes being prepared from scratch.
Sorted Delicatessen, Kalyani Nagar, Pune: Food
Sorted. Delicatessen is the brainchild of Girish Monie who started the deli with an aim to change the way people eat. Being a grain-free and naturally sweetened deli, wheat, rice, corn and sugar are replaced by healthier, wholesome options like buckwheat, amaranth, water-chestnuts, raw honey, coconut flower nectar and a range of different nuts. With such a unique menu, I wanted to try almost everything on the menu.We started with the sorted traditional breakfast which was scrambled eggs on primal toast, grilled pork sausage, crispy bacon rashers, sauteed mushrooms, roasted tomato, grilled asparagus and sweet potato hash. The scramble was smooth and creamy and was paired well with the toast. The bacon rashers were crisped to perfection. The pork sausage, mushrooms, tomatoes and asparagus were the perfect accompaniments to make this a great traditional English breakfast plate. Continuing our ‘breakfast’ menu exploration, we tried the banana smoothie bowl which was a large bowl of banana smoothie blended with peanut butter and cinnamon and mixed with green apples, pomegranate, kiwis, almond and coconut flakes and honey. The end-result was fresh and all the ingredients worked very well together. The yogurt used in the smoothie was a bit sour and was salvaged by an extra spoon of honey.
Finding a substitute for wheat flour to make breads and wraps is an extremely difficult task. But at Sorted the options are plenty. You can choose from a buckwheat wrap with beetroot or carrots or a more adventurous cauliflower wrap with fenugreek, spinach or moringa. We had the paneer tikka wrapped in cauliflower and spinach wrap. The soft paneer filling was perfectly accompanied by lettuce, grilled onion and ricotta and the cauliflower spinach wrap was the perfect choice to go with the paneer tikka. In sandwiches, we recommend the pesto chicken sandwich in multi-seed bread, served with a fresh salad and crunchy and delicious sweet potato crisps. The pizzas get a healthy avatar too with a choice of crusts made from cauliflower, buckwheat, amaranth and quinoa. The meaty happy ending pizza with a buckwheat base is our pick among the pizzas.
Imagine healthy desserts which taste great. You have plenty of choices, but we highly recommend the tiramisu sweetened with coconut sugar and served almond biscotti, the carrot cake sweetened with coconut sugar and topped with cream cheese frosting and the big fat chocolate cake made with buckwheat flour and sweetened with forest honey. Considering the desserts and sweets are ‘guilt-free’ you can get their almond cookies and raspberry muffins packed.
