Sorriso in Marriott Suites, is a good option if you want to try out dishes from the northern parts of Italy.
Sorriso: Marriott Suites Pune, Mundhwa, Pune – Decor
Almost a year ago, the erstwhile Bistro that specialized in Italian delicacies along with European specialties was replaced by Sorriso with a sole focus on Italian fare. White tablecloth laden tables, the al fresco walled by a vertical garden and Italian music that oscillates from opera to folk, it’s quite a sophisticated setting without any uppitiness that’s usually associated with an upscale restaurant.
Sorriso: Marriott Suites Pune, Mundhwa, Pune – Food
The chef hails from Brescia from the Lombardy region in Italy, and the menu pays homage to Northern Italy’s cooking. There’s more butter at play that olive oil in the dishes and meat and cheese form a big part of the menu. The expansive menu (a tab) with every page displaying a picture of the dish along with its description has plenty of options for vegetarians as well. If you aren’t here for a course by course meal, start with the pizza. The handmade gourmet pies are their specialty, of which the Funghi topped with mushroom cream, a huge dollop of creamy burrata, cherry tomatoes and truffle oil is an absolute stunner. The Sorriso Salad with peppery rocket leaves, sundried tomatoes, bocconcini, pine nuts is light meal option but could have done with an extra splash of balsamic vinegarette.
Onto to the more meaty and hearty options like the delicious Carpaccio, thinly-sliced tenderloin dressed in lime juice and served with sweet potato and a dehydrated tomato and black olive powder. From the seafood, the Cozze Ripene, wine-poached green lip mussel cooked with bechamel and deep-fried pairs well with a glass of Chardonnay. Speaking of deep-fried, there’s Zucca e Taleggio where taleggio cheese (a mild cheese) is crumb-fried and served on a bed of sweet pureed pumpkin. The pumpkin mash was a bit of a miss, but the fried cheese is delicious.
The pasta section features familiar dishes like aglio olio and spaghetti arrabbiata but if you want something new, go for the deceivingly decadent Casoncelli Bresciani, toffee-shaped pasta stuffed with Parma ham, pancetta, butter and sage. Another hot seller is a very subtle Tagliolini al Limone, taglioni pasta that is slightly thicker than spaghetti tossed in lemon juice, butter and parsley. The desserts, which are supplied by Pune Baking Company, are strictly okay, especially for the price.
Plus & Minus:
A good option in the city to get a taste of good quality Italian fare.
Review [2]
Sorriso is a modern Italian restaurant situated in Marriott Suites, located in a quaint and quiet lane of Koregaon Park. The beautiful alfresco dining area, the open kitchen, a curated modern Italian menu and the variety of wines makes Sorriso a must-visit place to spend a relaxed evening with friends or family and it’s perfect for a date. As dine-in services are currently suspended, they have opened their menu for deliveries across the city. I promptly grabbed the opportunity and ordered food perfect for a working lunch at home. I placed the order directly with the restaurant. Safety and delivery guidelines like contact-less delivery, instructions to dispose the containers and exterior bags, and hygiene levels maintained during packing and delivery were clearly mentioned on the delivery menu sent to me.
Food:
As the distance between my home and the restaurant is long, I stuck to dishes which would travel well. So I avoided pizzas and deep fried dishes. The freshness of the insalata rustica (rustic greens, roasted garlic, grilled mushroom and parmesan flakes) was intact and was perfect for a summer afternoon. The bruschettas complemented the salad perfectly. The topping was the classic tomato and mozzarella, but the flavor was elevated with the three tomato confit, fresh mozzarella and basil and a generous drizzle of extra virgin olive oil. From the antipasti section, along with the bruschettas, I also ordered the braised pork belly. The fat and the meat layers of the belly were cooked well. The whiskey based sauce with spring onion bulbs added a great flavor to the pork. Adding the crispy skin is always a good idea, but here it could have been left out as it was thick and chewy. From their range of pastas, I ordered the vegetarian Lasagna Di Verdure and the Spaghetti Allo Zafferano E Gamberi. The lasagna sheets, the grilled vegetables and the cherry tomato sauce were layered perfectly. The drizzle of rucola oil added a mildly spicy and peppery element to the dish. To my surprise, the spaghetti was disappointing. The spaghetti was tad too thin and most of it had clumped together. The saving grace was the fragrant saffron and butter sauce and the prawns. From the mains, I tried the Chicken Scaloppini. Two chicken breasts cooked in a flavorful red wine sauce accompanied with garlic mushroom and a generous portion of buttery mash potato. This one was a stellar dish. Sorriso’s signature Tiramisu is probably one of the best in the city. Of course, I ordered a portion and it was as delicious as ever. One spoon is enough to put a smile on your face. It lives up to the name Sorriso which literally means smile in Italian!
Plus & Minus:
The experience of dining at a fine-dine restaurant can never be replicated when you order the food at home. But adapting to the new normal, it is great to see fine-dine restaurants stepping up their delivery game. The food from Sorriso was well packed and delivered on time. Barring the spaghetti, everything else we ordered was excellent. I am looking forward to ordering their specially curated set meals which are on offer till the end of May.
