Smoke House Deli, Whitefield, Bangalore: Decor
Smoke House Deli has moved further afield and its latest outlet is in Whitefield, at the Forum Shantiniketan mall. It has the charming, sun-lit quality associated with the brand’s decor. There’s an island bar dispensing sangria and other beverages and there are black and white drawings of ingredients on the walls. Fresh flowers on the tables lend a nice touch.

It’s a fairly compact menu – soups, salads, appetizers, pizza, pasta, burgers and sandwiches, mains and dessert. We ordered the Deli Local Cheese Tasting Plate to begin with. It contained batons of parmesan, cheddar, mozzarella and some bocconcini. The cheeses, except the cheddar, were ordinary and not helped by the watery California grapes that were served alongside.
We followed this with a salad of Asparagus Grape and Smoked Figs. The asparagus was hard to spot – perhaps they weren’t in season – and the salad was dressed with indifference. Our main course was Bacon-Wrapped Tenderloin and Burnt Hollandaise. The meat – we asked for medium done – was a bit chewy, but the dish was saved by the bacon and the flavorful sauce, plus a hearty mound of veggies.
We wrapped up our meal with a scoop of Dulce de Leche ice cream made in-house and it was excellent.

We waited nearly 30 minutes for the cheese platter to arrive. I’m usually willing to wait for food, but this was only a matter of assembling ingredients on a plate and the delay wasn’t justified. To give credit to the staff, they did take the salad off my bill, noticing that I hadn’t eaten more than a few forkfuls.
Plus & Minus:
This is a pleasant spot and a welcome addition to the eating out scene in Whitefield. Some of the dishes could do with fine-tuning, and so could the service.
