Smoke House Deli, Vasant Kunj: About

Completely redone from its former avatar, this one is bright and peppy, with the striking use of railings that divide the interiors into ‘inside’ and ‘outside’. Greater verisimilitude is achieved by an indoor ‘garden’, complete with ‘soil’. It is a complete overhaul of the interiors, taking Smokehouse Deli into a bolder, un-deli-like version of itself. A quick read of the menu and your brain is overloaded with too many ‘must tries’ to go around a table of two diners. Let it be said that the menu of this deli is one of the most mouth-watering that I have encountered in our dusty, listless city. It is like a shot of fresh air, having more in common with a deli in New York than New Delhi. And the menu, for breakfast, lunch and dinner, really does include ready to cook and ready to eat meats: the very definition of a delicatessen!

Food

If, for whatever reason, you would like to eat all three meals in a single restaurant, Smokehouse Deli would be a very apt choice indeed. Their breakfasts are of the hearty, imaginative kind, and for an eatery that is heavily loaded towards meats, breakfasts that make use of India’s ancient grains and low-glycaemic ingredients that, combined with fresh fruit, make for deliciousness in a bowl. Full marks to whoever designed the menu. Just oneexample is almonds and rajgira granola with whipped citrus yoghurt, ripe seasonal fruits and smoked honey ( 295). Pancakes, waffles, toasties, eggs every way you can imagine and tartines: just the breakfast menu is three pages long. Grilled prawns in butter garlic chilli ( 585) turned out to be shrimps cooked to crunchy perfection in lashings of butter, sprinkled over with enough chilli for a pleasant degree of heat. Smoked sausage platter with bacon mash, red wine jus and corn bread ( 750) promised more than it delivered, sadly, in terms of flavour. Vietnamese roast chicken
salad in multi-grain wrap ( 450) was just one of their deservedly famous sandwiches that places Smokehouse Deli head and shoulders above everybody else in the city: it has been claimed that Delhi and NCR is not the bestplace for sandwich lovers. Boss style aglio olio pepperoncino spaghetti ( 450) totally hit the spot.
