Sindh Kitchen, Malleshwaram, Bangalore: Decor

The restaurant is on the fourth floor of the Bloom Boutique Hotel on Malleswaram’s busy Sampige Road. It’s a neat little place with some tables offering street views. There’s not much by way of adornment, save for multicolored floor tiles that add a bright note.

Sindh Kitchen, Malleshwaram, Bangalore: Food

I believe restaurants serving ethnic Indian cuisines — not the jaded staples of Naan, Dal Makhni and Paneer Tikka — are worth seeking out, and was looking forward to my meal at Sindh Kitchen. When I arrived, I realized that despite its name, the Sindhi repertoire here is small and is part of a menu that lists Tandoori Salad and Paneer Khurchan.

Distinctly Sindhi dishes were what I was looking for. We ordered the Dal Pakwan — or Tikra as it’s known in Sindhi homes — to start with. The pakwan was crisp and thinner than I’ve had elsewhere and the dal was perfect, made even better with the tamarind chutney that was served with it.

Then I had the Koki with the Sindhi Mutton. The curry was meaty and rich and had little mutton koftas along with chunks of meat. The rotis were chewy and not the deliciously spicy breads they should have been. I also had some Khameeri Roti with the curry, and that didn’t work that well either.

We wrapped up our meal with the popular comfort meal — Sindhi Kadhi Chawal & Took. The Took, a simple thing that takes patience to achieve its crunchy exterior and soft centre, was excellent, enhancing the rice and Kadhi. A small katori of Meethi Boondi is served with the meal, and you are to scatter some of it on the rice and drown it all in kadhi, savoring the mix of sweet and sour in every mouthful. The boondi was delightful, too, and you can have a larger serving for dessert if you wish.

I took away a portion of Afghani Murgh Malai Tikka. It was pleasant enough, but nothing you cannot order in any North Indian restaurant in town. I would like to see greater focus on Sindhi cuisine here; that would really give me a reason to go there again.
