Shree Mithai, Chetpet, Chennai: Decor
Shree Mithai, established in 1987, is a landmark in Chetpet. With no-nonsense, clean and bright interiors, the outlet is spacious and the counters are loaded with food every which way I look. Each one is organised to offer different ‘goodies’, including baked stuff — cookies, breads, cakes, etc. An Indian snack display counter occupies the centre of the shop. One look and you know what fresh snacks are available any given day.
Known for their sweets, they have sweets weighed and packed in different sizes. So, all I need to do is choose my sweet, the weight I want to buy and let the counter person know. Within minutes, my packets arrive at the cash counter. I pay for it and am off. Efficiency at its best.
Shree Mithai, Chetpet, Chennai: Food
Let’s talk about food. Every time I visit the place, I caution myself to go easy on the chaat and mithai. But once inside, I forget earlier promises and go all out.
First, I must have Paani Puri, the most satisfying of all chaat for me. I love the crisp puri with all its fillings, including flavored liquids poured in. Paani Puri is all about nostalgia, setting the mood for more. I like how they package it for my takeaway. The puris are sealed shut in a packet. Mashed potatoes with boiled channa go into a small white container and the two paanis – sweet and theeka (spicy) are given in small bottles.
Then, I ask for Bhel to be packed. I expect to be told it will get soggy etc. But to my surprise, it comes in a layered container. One has the dry puffed rice mixture, while another compartmentalized one holds a mix of sweet, red garlic and green chutneys. The other side has chopped onions, mangoes and a little tomato. All I need to do when I get home is mix everything in the lower, larger section of the container and enjoy it.
Another advantage of this style of container is that you can store the chutneys in the fridge, and leave the dry stuff outside, in the airtight box.
I’m sure the brand’s famous Kesar Peda must be their bestseller. Soft, sweet, milky, slightly grainy, this one is a huge hit with almost everybody who tastes it.
Another favourite is the Sangam Burfi. Thin, it has three layers — one of kesar and cashew, another with rose gulkand, and the third of milk cream. The top of each triangle is covered with a glamorous fine silver leaf, neatly dotted with slivers of nuts.
Lately introduced, the Cranblue Dry Fruit Roll is a small disc made using dried cranberries, blueberries and small pieces of nuts: cashew, almond and pistachio. Most of its sweetness comes from the berries making it a healthy option packed with taste, texture and antioxidants.
Plus & Minus:
Always crowded, there’s never a dull moment in their day. The brand has clearly struck a chord, with its customer base growing. All their five outlets have chaat, fancy mithai, snacks and baked goods.
