Seasonal Tastes, Velachery, Chennai: Decor

Well spaced-out tables and a choice of views — either the garden on the left or the garden on the right. One side overlooks the way to the car park behind the plants, while the other offers a view of the atrium, plants and greenery. On the other side of the atrium is Westin Velachery’s large banquets hall.

I’m here for the buffet lunch.

The restaurant, off the lobby, has a high ceiling, lots of daylight and a live kitchen. In the middle, an island with a fascinating display of sparkling bottles filled with colorful liquids.

I choose a table with a view of the atrium. It has fewer occupied tables, though the air-conditioning is less effective here.

Seasonal Tastes, Velachery, Chennai: Food

Traditional, cool Paanagam is always welcome. Sweetened with Karupatti Vellam (local, unrefined palm jaggery) it has antioxidant elements like ginger and pepper.

Ramen broth is made using a stock of all veggies, therefore highly flavorsome, and the noodles are imported from Japan. Along with those noodles that are at the bottom of the bowl, there’s silken tofu, chunky veggies like zucchini, broccoli, carrots, etc. Non-veg options include chicken and pork.

I’m quite enchanted by the Arabic Couscous Salad. More than the well-cooked granules and veggies, I find myself scraping the bottom of my plate because of the beetroot and feta sauce that lifts the whole couscous to a level of enchantment.

My main course is Dum Ki Nalli, made of lamb shank. This shank means business. I know what I am eating is local lamb and am perfectly content with its flavours and the meat. Especially with some roti instead of rice, as I can scoop in the gravy, with a little bit of meat and enjoy it all together rather than mix it with rice.

For dessert, I’d definitely recommend the Elneer Payasam. I love how the Chef has added saffron, nuts and large pieces of tender coconut.

Plus & Minus:

It is such a pleasure to see this place back in full form with a full, working menu, sourcing out ingredients from suppliers that the hotel trusts.
