Salvadores, MG Road, Bangalore: Decor

Restaurants in malls are often charmless. But Salvadores, on the top floor of Bangalore Central in the heart of town, will have you going back just for the ambience. The main space is an old-fashioned dining room that is elegantly furnished. But the best of all is a lovely terrace, bedecked with flowering plants, offering a pleasing view of Mayo Hall and the surrounding greenery. When much of Bengaluru is a work-in-progress and an eyesore, Salvadores is reminiscent of all that was pretty and laidback about the city. It’s from another time and so is the music. You can listen to Pat Boone and Jim Reeves while you wait for your meal.

Salvadores, MG Road, Bangalore: Food

Remember the old Victoria Hotel that was razed to make way for the mall? And the closing of which caused consternation among regulars who went here for the appams and the charm of the place? Well, Salvadores has been opened by the family that ran the original Victoria and is, in essence, a tribute to that vintage restaurant and its food.

It has a small menu peppered with several retro classics. There’s an all-day breakfast and also three course, prix fixe menus. We ordered from the à la carte selection and began with the Smoked Chicken and Apple Salad with a honey mustard dressing. The chicken was juicy, the greens were fresh and crisp, and the dressing was sweet and tangy.

For main course, I had the Grilled Pork Chop — a lean cut, with cider raisin sauce, a sweet potato mash and vegetables, quaintly called ‘legumes’ on the menu. The pork chop was nicely done and the sweetness of the raisins worked nicely with it. I had a taste of the Herb Grilled Sirloin Steak my companion ordered and was utterly impressed with the quality of the steak and the way it had been rendered. Keeping the retro theme going, I asked for the Trifle Pudding for dessert. That was the one off note in an otherwise pleasing meal. The fruit was sour and off, and the cream had broken up.

To drink, choose from an eclectic wine list with bottles that are attractively priced.
