RockSalt, St. Marks Road, Bangalore: DECOR
Walk in and be wowed. RockSalt is a high ceilinged space that lets the outdoors in with its mostly wood interiors and vertical greenery. Jars of multi-colored ingredients light up the bar. You can relax on sofas scattered with floral printed cushions or choose the high tables. On the afternoon I was there, a large — and noisy — kitty party was in progress.

Chef Abhijit Saha, whose venture this is, has, over the years been working with Indian food, bringing to it his penchant for experimenting and his skill for Instagram-ready presentation. Modern Indian is one of the highlights of the RockSalt menu and be assured you’ll be clicking away as every plate arrives.
For appetizer, I had the Stuffed Paniyaram, the unpretentious South India snack, here given chic treatment. It comes stuffed with masala and is served with a vibrant beetroot chutney and was perfectly nice. My companion ordered the Baked Chicken Samosa, an attractive set-up of six mini samosas sitting atop shot glasses holding yogurt, imli chutney and green chutney foam. The samosas were crisp and the filling tasty, but I didn’t think the condiments arranged with such meticulousness did very much to enhance the whole.
For main course we opted for the conventional. My order was the Bengali Style Fish Curry. It packed a good mustard kick and came topped with straw potatoes. I ate it with plain rice and it was a comforting meal. My companion’s Hyderabadi Mutton Biryani was fragrant and spicy — another satisfying dish. For dessert we ordered the much-photographed Gulab Jamun Inspired Cheesecake, served with poached pears and macaroon and a lovely Rajbhog-flavored ice cream.
RockSalt is a good place for an evening of drinks and the bar shakes up desi-inflected cocktails flavored with everything from curry leaf to kokum and cinnamon.
