Q33, Quest Mall, Ballygunge, Kolkata: Decor

We have indeed arrived in exciting and exceptional times. When our public appearances are rude and rare. We hide our faces for health reasons, socially distance for the sake of world safety and make personal entertainment a great conversation topic of luxury. It is during such times that even being an enthusiastic spectator in a vibrant mall cafe, surrounded by the non stop energy boosters, shopping displays and people’s experiences culminate into a thrilling evening well spent. After years, we revisited Q33, the cheerful all day dining and 360degree ground floor vantage viewing at the Quest Mall.

I’ve always found the clever location and the Q format surrounding the escalators an intentional tweak in the design. Neat and comfortable seating, discreet spacing and toned-down earthy brown and beige colours blend seamlessly into the jazzed up mall interiors. You can actually choose your speck of peace amidst the chaos of a modern marketplace, not alone and forlorn for once, even in the post pandemic era, the thought itself may feel heartwarming enough.

Q33, Quest Mall, Ballygunge, Kolkata: Food

The global menu tries a hand at everything pushing cafe boundaries to inclusive meals. Choices vary from anytime breakfast, soups, salads, sandwiches, pizzas to fried rice, Asian curries, a lofty grilled chicken and a decision of dabbling with your own pastas; regular refined flour or hearty whole wheat. We keep it progressive with a Cinnamon French toast (₹275), Asparagus and goat cheese barquettes (₹425), an 8″ Margherita (₹275), a Grilled fish with caper butter sauce (₹575), Salted caramel cream cold brew (₹240) and a Monte Carlo (₹175) from the bakery extension counter.

Plus & Minus:

And, thank God for service. It is still catering to the basic frills of proper cutlery and service at the table, in a world which has pushed us to a dull, disposable reality of plastics and self service in the name of no contact hospitality. First, the mini, pastry boat tarts come with savory, gooey goat cheese and asparagus bites straight from the oven, with a welcome drizzle of balsamic. The pizza arrives hot, in quick succession, with a so-called thin crust, almost crispy biscuit base and melted mozzarella, cherry tomatoes and fresh basil topping. The white fish fillet, bit overly done, whisked in a delicate butter pan-grill, is substantial with a hint of mustard zing and squeeze of lime and sauteed veggies on a bed of mash. The French toast in its tender richness and golden crisp edges, make a perfect ending with snowy powdered sugar and promised note of cinnamon, ample smothering of maple syrup and side of bananas and wonder why watermelons in November. The cold brew added bitter sweet memories in thick salted caramel cream, but we made the mistake of adding a layered Monte Carlo, a totally disappointing jar with non-descript chocolate topped with thick cream instead of my much-loved frozen ice cream avatar.
