Punjabiyat – By Jassi De Parathe, Thaltej, Ahmedabad: Decor
The highlight of this restaurant is the kitchen area that is view-able from the tables with a traditional charcoal cook stove or chulha as its centerpiece. The blue walls of this glass walled kitchen provides a colorful contrast to the brick-clad walls, wooden tables and woody brown ceilings of the restaurant. A patch of floral patterned tiles near the entrance, colored glass and peacock motifs set on the door and decorous cabinets on the wall lend colour to the restaurant. The focus is on traditional Indian work from a patterned table to terracotta work and metal figures set in niches. Overall, an appropriate decor bringing the rustic and garish elements associated with northern India together without being too over-the-top.
Punjabiyat – By Jassi De Parathe, Thaltej, Ahmedabad: Food
The promoter brings together memories of his native Punjab through a section of the menu called pushtiaini khana – a list of dishes cooked on the chulha or hearth that is believed to bring out the natural flavour of the ingredients.I tried the baigan bartha which had the slightly silky texture of mashed eggplant with a rural flavour, the chole paneer ki sabji which had smooth and soft chunks of paneer contrasting with firm chickpea, Amritasari aloo wadiyan and the mushroom mutter, a must have for those who like mushroom. Desi chana tariwala is one of the dishes that evoke memories of the highway dhabas. The restaurant also offers daily specials – I was happy to see that they have dishes made with arbi (taro root), kathal (jackfruit) and bhindi (okra) and other vegetables besides the ubiquitous paneer, aloo, gobhi, rajma and chhole you get in most restaurants. You could also opt for combo meals like missi roti-dal makhani, chholekhulchaand rajma-chawalwith complimentary chhash.Winter specials include sarson da saag – makki di roti and haldi mutterjawar roti. There are many flat breads on offer, and expectedly for a restaurant run by Jassi de Parathe there are stuffed parathas too. There are also biryanisand pulaos.
I also enjoyed the aloo tikki chaat – the croquets were crispy and the overall taste piquant. The Jain-friendly chaats include dahi bhalle, desi chana chaat, shakarkandi ki chaat and namak.
I ended with the gajar ka halwa from the winter menu, which was homey and comforting.
Punjabiyat – By Jassi De Parathe, Thaltej, Ahmedabad: Plus & Minus
With good Punjabi food and Punjabi theme decor to match, this is a must visit for those who like North Indian food. The restaurant uses fresh produce and claims that some of their ingredients are organic.
