Pulimunchi, Indiranagar, Bangalore: Decor
Pulimunchi has the advantage of a prime location on 100 Feet Road, Indiranagar. It’s on the second floor of a building. A glass frontage gives diners a view of the street below. Mangalore tiles give this large space a rustic touch, while wooden pillars and brass lamps serve to set the mood. There used to be a full bar at Pulimunchi, now the bar counter dispenses only wine.
Pulimunchi, Indiranagar, Bangalore: Food
Being particularly fond of coastal cooking, I have dined here several times. I’ve had excellent Pulimunchi — the tart, red fish curry that the restaurant is named after. There’s also the Yetti Pundi, which is rice dumplings soaking in a tasty prawn curry.
On my recent visit, however, I noticed the food wasn’t as good as I remembered it to be. We ordered the Silver Fish Rava Fry and that was perfectly good. None of the vegetarian appetizers we wanted – the Breadfruit Fry and the Raw Jack fruit South Chilli – were available.
We ordered the Chicken Ghee Roast with Neer Dosa next. The dosas were white and soft. The Ghee Roast Masala was done well, but the chicken was in too large pieces; there were whole leg pieces on the platter. The best ghee roasts I’ve had use much smaller portions of chicken and it does make a difference to the dish.
Then, it was the Appams with Egg Stew, described on the menu as a ‘house special’. Again, the appam was good, but the stew was a grey, curdled mess and we couldn’t go beyond a couple of mouthfuls. I’d like to think this restaurant, where I’ve eaten some good coastal food, was just having a bad day.
Pulimunchi, Indiranagar, Bangalore: Service
There were lots of wait staff justing hanging about watching the few customers in the restaurant.
They didn’t seem too eager to please the customers either.
Pulimunchi, Indiranagar, Bangalore: Plus & Minus
There are some good dishes to be had here. The non-availability of dishes and the indifferent service are downers.
