Questions: Is this a home decor store, which serves food? Or is it a restaurant, which sells home decor?
Answers: Yes to both. In the intriguingly named Plum by Bent Chair, it’s possible to eat your salad and buy not only that funky plate (a skull wearing headphones) it is served on but also the chair you’re sitting on. Just back from Budapest and off to Miami, our charming globetrotting foodie buddies Behman and Lynne Homji dined with us. They enjoyed it and will happily come back, too.
Plum by Bent Chair, Lower Parel, Mumbai: Decor
Walk in and wham! A profusion of colour, light and shapes hits you. It takes a minute to re-adjust focus to distinguish… quirky, colorful, wall hangings, chandeliers, flowers and more. This 55 seater is plonked cheek by jowl (sharing a glass wall) with Lord of the Drinks and right next to Rocky Star Cocktail Bar.
Plum by Bent Chair, Lower Parel, Mumbai: Food
From the mellow to fiery… from plump, moist dimsum (ask for the chicken, the white fungus, veg crystal dimsum, too) to Tiger Prawns stir fried with chilli garlic and basil. Prawn tempura rolled into sushi has the perfect crunch, lamb ginger scallion the right succulence. Vegetables mellow in oyster sauce, Cantonese sliced chicken in soy garlic turns out to be spicy szechwanese but tasty nonetheless. Plenty for vegetarians, too.
Plum by Bent Chair, Lower Parel, Mumbai: Minus Point
Why is the service so slow? It’s friendly but oh so-slow. Why does the music from the neighboring Lord of the Drinks keep booming through the glass wall? Soggy spring rolls, equally soggy Asian greens in oyster sauce disappoint. And the flatfooted desserts just don’t add up to anything, be it the Nutella sushi with banana or the over-the-top plum tropical cheesecake. Avoidable.
Plum by Bent Chair, Lower Parel, Mumbai: My Point
Let’s say it is all about happy marriages. Home decor store weds a restaurant. Innovative Pan Asian partners with comfort Chinese food. Ironically enough, (we find out later) there’s a husband-wife duo (restaurateur Priyank Sukhija and Natasha Jain of Bent Chair), who’ve teamed up to give birth to Plum by Bent Chair. Certainly not a venue for a quiet gourmet meal (the music from Lord of the Drinks keeps booming through). It’s all about colorful, chaotic dining here. Not fine dining but fun dining.
PS: I loved the black cutlery, but that was the only thing not on sale. Will surely go back to check out the quirky and unique home decor collection.
