Piazza Pizza By Little Italy, Shivaji Nagar, Pune

Piazza Pizza, a pizza delivery brand, was launched by the Little Italy team with a mission to make gourmet Italian pizzas and other appetizers easy to order and affordable. Going beyond the quintessential pizza, Piazza serves the Roman-style pizza called Pinsa Romana. While Little Italy is fully vegetarian, some of the Piazza outlets have non-vegetarian pizzas on the menu. This week, we ordered a range of pinsas from the Shivajinagar outlet, which was fully vegetarian.

Packaging:

Pinsas are rectangular in shape and they offer two different sizes. So the pizza boxes were customized as per the pinsa shape and size. The boxes were taped together and they were delivered on time. A pizza saver would have ensured that the toppings don’t stick to the lid, which in some cases had happened.

The word pinsa is derived from the Latin word ‘pinsere’ that translates to ‘push the dough by hands’. Traditionally, pinsa uses a combination of soy, rice, and wheat flour, which makes it healthier than traditional pizza dough which uses refined flour. The texture, when baked, is crispy on the outside and soft and airy inside. The menu is fully vegetarian. The pinsas come in two sizes, a full 5×7 inch version and a single slice version. We ordered 4 different types of slices to get a wider variety to taste. We tasted the truffle mushroom first which had mozzarella, goat cheese, marinated mushrooms, fresh rucola and truffle oil. A personal favourite, the addition of fresh rucola and freshly grated goat cheese was great and paired well with the mushrooms in this one. The pinsa crust was definitely light on the stomach and it did not feel doughy and stodgy. The Mexicana had paneer, sweet corn, olives, jalapeno and Monterey jack cheese along with a drizzle of pesto mayo on top. This one was slightly disappointing as the toppings, particularly jalapenos and corn were very less. Additionally, the mayo drizzle was not needed as it didn’t add anything to the taste. Next was the Sicilian pinsa which was delicious. It had spicy tomato sauce on the base topped with spiced mushrooms, pickled onions, garlic and fresh basil. Among pinsas, Napolian was the last which was strictly okay. The truffle mushroom and the Sicilian were our top picks. The other two were good, but nothing extraordinary. But the real disappointment was the penne arrabbiata. It was under seasoned and lacked any flavour except tomatoes. While the menu mentioned garlic bread sticks, they were regular garlic bread slices. They tasted good, but the accompanying dip was not delivered.

Plus & Minus:

Introducing the healthier pinsas is definitely a welcome change for pizza lovers. While some of the pinsas were impressive, the penne arrabbiata was quite disappointing. There definitely needs some regrouping and taste checks by the management for these seemingly simple dishes.
