A pet-friendly café with a New York-style menu
Pet-friendly cafes have popped up in Bengaluru in recent times. They are places pet owners can take their Lab or Persian and linger over a cappuccino and slice of cake. Pet People Café in HSR Layout upgrades the concept and enhances the experience by several notches.
It’s set within PawsnCollars, a pet care store selling grooming products, dog treats and cat collars. The cafe looks out on the street through large glass panels. Seating is on large, comfortable also pet-proof sofas. The menu has been designed by the acclaimed chef, Abhijit Saha. After his many expressions, such as modern European, progressive Indian and Mediterranean, here, Chef Saha, a pet lover himself, has crafted a menu described as ‘plant-forward, based on sustainability and guilt-free dining.’ The dishes are inspired by the culinary style of New York and its melting pot nature.
I went here for lunch on one of the many drizzly afternoons we’ve been having of late. I had the Fifth Avenue Avocado on Sourdough Toast, settling for a small plate and the salsa version (₹145). The other options were sliced avocado with cream cheese or plant based cream and smashed avocado with bocconcini. The bread was crisp with good flavour and generously slathered with guacamole.
Dining solo, a small plate was my next course as well: the Roasted Sweet Potato Gnocchi Aglio Olio e Pepperoncini (₹325) from the section titled Carnegie Hill Appetizers. It was a platter of bright fresh flavours coming from the blistered cherry tomatoes and the crunchy broccoli that accompanied the gnocchi, which were sweet and soft.
I drank an Americano (₹150) with my meal. It was from a single estate bean, strong and sprightly and served in a very large cup. The flavored coffees and Real Hot Chocolate also looked very tempting.
From the cafe I took away the Upside Down Caramelized Apple Cake (₹250) and the Cranberry Cinnamon Roll (₹125). I would have loved more apple fruitiness in the cake. When you dine in it comes with vanilla ice cream and I guess that helps. I warmed up the roll in the oven the next day and had it with my morning Darjeeling. It was utterly satisfying.
At the cafe, I caught myself constantly looking up from my meal to watch a very cute Golden Retriever posing for photos with his family at an adjacent table. That’s one of the sweetest things about going to the Pet People Cafe.
