Peshawri, ITC Narmada, Ahmedabad: About

Peshawri is an iconic ITC restaurant brand specialising in cuisine from North India & the Northwest Frontier.

Decor

Like the other Peshawri restaurants, the one at ITC Narmada also has theatrical interiors with stone-clad walls, stone floors, wooden tables and props that suggest it serves North West Frontier cuisine. The menu too comes on a wooden slab. But, here the seating is more comfortable with backrests unlike the low stools I have sat on at some of the other Peshawri restaurants and the rough-hewn fort-like appearance has been moderated. The waiters are dressed in long, loose-fitting clothes, brocaded jackets, pyjamas of the kind worn by the Pathans of Peshawar. The food is served in earthenware, and the glasses are copper.

Food

The Peshawri team cooks entirely in clay ovens or tandoors. We began with the Barrah Kebab, which was expectedly robust and fork-tender though the waiters will tell you their food is best enjoyed eaten with hands. The tandoori selection is vast with dishes like the Tandoori Jhinga, the creamy-textured Murg Malai Kabab and silky-smooth Reshmi Kebab. The Tandoori Chicken is succulent and tender, an ideal counterfoil to the roasty flavour given by the tandoor. For vegetarians, Paneer Tikka is soft and creamy, the Tandoori Phool is one of their signatures and the Tandoori Simla Mirch is worth trying.
The star of the menu is Sikandari Raan, leg of a spring lamb marinated overnight and then tandoor-roasted. The meat easily came off the bone as I enjoyed each morsel of the perfectly spiced lamb.
If you cannot have a meal without your curry-fix you can go for Murg Makhani and Paneer Khurchan. Do not miss having the Dal Bukhara, slow cooked on the tandoor through the night. The breads are a strong feature of the restaurant – the Naan Peshawri can be shared between two or more, this gigantic bread is made using the entire wall of a tandoor.
If you have room for dessert after all this, they have Indian sweets like gulab jamun, kesar rasmalai, phirni and kulfi, which are also excellent.
