Past. Present. Perfect. It’s triple celebration time. Olive Bar & Kitchen opened for dine in this Monday. It’s celebrating its 20th anniversary and in the perfection of things… I’m lunching with Olive’s very first guest, the legendary tennis superchamp Leander Paes. It was 20 years ago that he celebrated his historic number one in the world in Olive. He continues to dine here regularly. He also continues to win awards, Arjuna Award, Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan and holds the world record of seven times Olympian.

Memorable Grand Slam Lunch

It sure is a memorable Grand Slam lunch with the charming and gallant Leander Paes. He blows me off my feet with his gift of long stemmed roses, a surprise birthday wish for me (candle et al) and then his masterful juggling of the tennis ball from the French Grand Slam Monte Carlo. High octane, multi-talented, drummer, scuba diver and globetrotting gourmet cooks brilliantly. He inherits his sporting genius genes from his father, an Olympic hockey champ and mother, basketball captain of the Indian team, and gourmet ones from his grandparents and mom. In between our delicious lunch under the trees, I’m excited to find out all about Leander’s pioneering projects in education, philanthropy, movies and books. He is unstoppable, much like AD Singh of the forever popular Olive Group, with his 26 restaurants in eight cities.

Mediterranean In Mumbai

Now that Olive is open for dine in (all safety protocols in place) during the day, get yourself a table under the trees… every table’s an island! Ask for the Olive signature, velvety baked brie, heady with musky truffle marscapone, drizzled with truffle honey and perched on top of housemade raisin bread. A winner all the way. Like our Leander. He and I both recommend the spicy Goan chorizo empanadas, encased in this flaky buttery crust with braised onions paired with a raisin and sundried tomato dip with a nuance of sweetness. This Goa-marries-Spain dish is created by the talented Head Chef Chirag Makwana, recipient of the prestigious Red Seal Chef Certificate from Canada where he worked for several years. As Head Chef of Olive, he’s created a new menu along with brilliant Group Chef Manu Chandra’s guidance. Ask for the Prawn Espetadas, which delights with its roundness of flavour. Plump soft burrata salad with locally sourced burrata, corn veloute and spiced mix seeds is a must. As is the pepperoni pizza. End with the kissed with coffee, made to silken perfection… the Olive signature tiramisu. Currently, they are offering a Greek special menu, too.

It’s a big deal. To stand the test of time in fickle foodie Mumbai. And Olive has done it for the past 20 years. It continues to refresh itself and stay evergreen, magnetizing the glam ma’ams, models, stars, business moguls and all in between. The charming and farsighted AD Singh blazed a whole new trend, 20 years ago. Bandra’s Olive Bar & Kitchen, serves up a sun-dappled alfresco ambiance and a charming Greek white walled indoors, a bustling bar and also a place to see and be seen at. Get a taste of the vibrant, colorful Mediterranean — a spot of Mediterranean sunshine in monsooned Mumbai!
