Northwest Kebab & Curryhouse, Bangalore: Decor

Beginning at Jamavar at the then newly opened Leela Palace several years ago, Chef Sanjay Tyagi has gone on to establish himself as a specialist and master of North Indian cuisine. He has opened several standalone restaurants and Northwest Kebab & Curryhouse in Koramangala is his latest venture.

Northwest Kebab & Curryhouse, Koramangala, Bangalore: Food

It’s a compact 40-seater restaurant, done up in a simple style that’s pleasing to the eye. In a see-through kitchen staff grill kebabs and make tandoori rotis. I began my meal here with a sampler of kebabs. There was a Sarson Fish Tikka (₹429), tilapia marinated in a yellow mustard paste which had a fairly sharp kick. The Chicken Behari Kebab (₹389) was a tender escalope marinated with chilli, cumin and coriander, resulting in robust, yet clean flavours. The Chapli Kebab (₹439) is a pan-fried kebab of minced mutton and was remarkably juicy. The Tandoori Broccoli (₹289) is a nod to vegetarians, but pales in comparison to the meat kebabs.

The Shinwari curry, unique to the North West Frontier, is a signature dish here. I had the mutton version (₹589). The gravy is almost entirely tomato-based, seasoned with green chilli and ginger. It was a welcome change from the cream-laden dishes passing as ‘curry’ in most places. I would, though, have liked the mutton to have absorbed more flavour from the gravy. I ate this with Ulte Tawe ka Paratha. A good vegetarian dish to try here is the Paanch Saag (₹339), a medley of seasonal greens, seasoned simply with garlic. This is best eaten with the Missi Roti. The Afghani Gosht Pulao (₹449) is an elegant dish of aromatic rice and tender meat. You’ll enjoy this if you like mildly spiced rice dishes. For dessert, there’s the soothing Samak ke Chawal ki Phirni (₹129).

Plus & Minus:

Northwest Kebab & Curryhouse doesn’t serve alcohol, but you could sip on some Kashmiri Kahwa (₹95) with your meal.
