Chennai’s famous, upmarket KNK Road has a large, new restobar: Nght Mrkt with no vowels in its name.

Up on the 3rd floor, it has the mandatory unfinished walls and lots of neon signs all around, just so you know where you are. And food stalls offering live counters for liquid nitrogen ice cream, momos and pasta, should you want to stand and watch your food being prepped up for you.

Nght Mrkt, Nungambakkam, Chennai: Food

The current menu is large enough to offer variety, yet small enough not to confuse the brain with far too many options.

I tried a dramatic cocktail called Wood Fort. Named so because an actual solid wooden log was brought to the table. Then, fresh spices were burned, and the glass I would drink from, was placed over spice embers. After which ice went in and my cocktail of bourbon, maple syrup, vanilla and homemade orange bitters was poured into the smoked glass, drizzled with a squeeze of fresh citrus. I found the whole procedure dramatic, and the final drink… luxurious.

To munch along, I had crispy, spicy Shoe String Potato. It had small pieces of fresh red chilli flashing the warning signs. You could ignore them or enjoy them.

Chilli Garlic Prawns meant what they said. These were large sized prawns — fresh and succulent. Their marinade of chilli flakes, fresh red chilli paste, onion powder, garlic powder, sumak and coriander stem had permeated right in. Wok-tossed, the prawns were accompanied with a salad of onion, tomato green coriander leaves and a secret ingredient that sets it apart.

They should’ve added ‘malai’ somewhere in the Yellow Chilli Chicken Tikka name. Each morsel on that skewer is succulent without being raw, and smoky without being overpowering. While I didn’t find the need to dab my tikka in the green chutney that came along, I enjoyed the masala tossed raw onion rings and green chilli.

My main course was a bowl of Kimchi Fried Rice and Brown Garlic Stir Fry. I liked the brown, thick-ish garlic sauce that mixed well with the rice. Because they were in the same bowl, there was a merger in the middle. That was the part I enjoyed the most, along with the veggies that were not overcooked or raw and had retained their form.

I recommend you book your Lotus Biscoff Serradura dessert before ordering your food or drinks. This one was a layered wonder. The texture was retained, even though there’s eggless custard in its layers.

Plus & Minus:

It took a long time to open, but when it did, it was to a healthy capacity. The ideas are fresh, food wholesome… different, and the drinks — cocktails and mocktails — delicious.
