Punekars and bakeries share an eternal bond that started in the nineteenth century. Even though bakeries and confectioneries were introduced by the British, this trend continued even after independence. In fact, bakeries became more popular as they adapted the recipes to suit the tastes of their Puneri clientele. Established in 1959, New Poona Bakery is one of Pune’s iconic bakeries. It was started by Rambhau Giramkar, a farmer from Daund, who came to Pune in search of better prospects.
From a small bakery in Rasta Peth, in these 60 years, NPB has expanded to more than 90 outlets in and around the city today.
New Poona Bakery, Wakad, Pune: Food
New Poona Bakery has been part of my childhood nostalgia. As a kid, no birthday would be complete without their vegetable puffs or pattice (Yes, pattice and not patties) and cream rolls. Even today no travel plans are complete without a dozen veg pattice for the road. People patiently waiting in a queue for the freshly baked, just-out-of-the-oven veg pattice is a common scene at their Appa Balwant Chowk outlet. Today, New Poona Bakery’s range of products includes a variety of bread, cakes, cookies, and a host of other sweet and savory offerings. The stores are open with limited timings and this week, I decided to pick up a range of goodies. From the puffs, we tried the signature vegetable puff. Puffs are generally rectangular, but the NPB ones are triangular, the pastry is crispy and the potato, peas, and vegetable filling is slightly spicy. We also tried the mushroom masala and paneer masala puffs. Out of these, the mushroom filling was really tasty. Cream rolls were next and the quantity of the cream filling in cream rolls was quite less, which was a tad disappointing. The chocolate doughnuts were topped with a generous drizzle of chocolate and tasted great. The chocolate walnut brownies were baked almost like a cake and were not gooey. But they were moist and delicious nonetheless. Apart from these, I also got packs of their special twist khari and jeera straws which were a perfect tea-time snack, particularly with the current spell of rain. Along with these, I greedily ordered whole-wheat pizza bases, multi-grain bread, and ladi paav. Their whole-wheat pizza base is perfect for a quick-fix DIY pizza. The NPB laadi paav or buns are soft and pillowy and our family’s go-to item when we make pav bhaji, dabeli, or wada pav at home.
Plus & Minus:
New Poona Bakery has successfully adapted and evolved in their 60 years journey. The value-for-money prices are a huge plus. The different varieties of pattice, bread, biscuits, and cookies have maintained their quality.
