Mount Road Social, Royapettah, Chennai: Decor
Blue orb lights, setting (or rising) sun behind trees, metal folding chairs and a large — 5,100 sq ft — bight space is the first impression Ilone gets of Mount Road Social. There’s comfortable sofa seating, semi-private nooks lining one side with large tables, sofas, cushions, etc. You must check out the passage leading to the restrooms. It’s different.
Mount Road Social, Royapettah, Chennai: Food
Known for its cocktails and accompanying ‘cakhnas’ and food, this place has something for everyone. Simple, Instagrammable presentations and plating leaves one charmed. Coconut Malai Tikka is, as the name promises, coconut-y, very South Indian in taste, because of the gundu chilli, curry leaf and mustard seeds used. Special effort is made on the onion tomato salad. Aacharoska — a cocktail, blends the traditional lime pickle with vodka, mint and a scoop of melting ice on top. Sweet, salty, aachary it can last all evening through. Deep-fried and addictive, Corn Cakhna is served in a white enamel coated plate with a blue rim plate with a lime wedge and cilantro sprig on top. A squeeze of the lime will add tang, otherwise, the coating of cornflour has just the right amount of chatpatta chaat masala mixed in. Drama unfolds as the heavy black-and-silver dabba holding Old School Chicken Tikka opens. Smoke emerges, and mustard oil flavour dominates. Again, the meat is soft with crusty edges and holds the flavour of tradition. Complete with green chutney and typical sliced onion. The menu is very varied and includes a variety of Momos. Butter Chilli Garlic Momos. Stuffed with carrot, cabbage, cilantro, ginger, etc. the momos are steamed and pan-tossed in butter with garlic, chilli flakes and parsley before being served with sriracha sauce. Pizza lovers should try the Tandoori Pizza. This one is actually made in a tandoor and they tell me that it is a first. Do you remember Ramesh and Suresh in the funny chocolate ads? This dessert is named after them. It arrives in an aluminium latched box with two cornflour coated and deep-fried small 5 Star bars aside a dollop of melting vanilla ice cream topped by nut slivers. Simple idea, but a great one nevertheless.
Plus & Minus:
This is a large space. Their breakfast all-day section of the menu has family favorites.
