Meghana Foods, Bellandur, Bangalore: Review
Meghana Foods has grown to become one of Bengaluru’s most-loved brands, especially for its value for-money range of biryanis. With branches spread across the city, fans are never far away from their favourite order.
The outlet on Sarjapur Road is one of the newer ones. Biryani chains have developed a décor style of their own; it comprises laminated tables, rexine-covered seats, wooden screens and a smattering of fake foliage. In any case, customers go to these places for the food that is both addictive and affordable, and don’t care much for the aesthetics o ambience.
It’s quite remarkable how biryani, once a special occasion meal, slow cooked by masters, has transformed to become a ‘fast food’, satisfying a growing market constantly clamouring for affordable and filling meals. You have to hand it to brands such as Meghana Foods for propelling this transformation, with their assembly line approach to a traditional dish. I, meanwhile, think of myself biryani as an old-fashioned purist when it comes to Indian food and tend to look askance at these modern methods, which sidestep the essential process of cooking meat and rice together. er. From this restaurant, I had the Meghana Special Biryani, which has regulars raving. The rice, long-grain Basmati, was cooked well, and the meat atop it was well-spiced. The Chicken Fry Biryani has the same rice and is topped with pieces of fried chicken.
Neither the raita nor the accompanying gravy was exceptional. If you order in from Meghana, the rice and meat come separately in branded foil packets.
Meghana’s popularity is proof that Bangalore has a special fondness for this style of biryani of no particular provenance.
