Mani’s Dum Biryani, HSR, Bangalore:
We are in the grip of a third wave and restaurants, barely recovering from the previous one, are taking a beating again. This is a time to support your favourite restaurants as best as you can; eat out, keeping COVID protocols and curfew timings in mind, and order direct. It makes a difference to these businesses. Also, curb the tendency to demand deals, discounts and larger and larger portions fora lower price. Some understanding from all of on that restaurants are struggling at this time may help them stay afloat.
One of the places I return to when I want an inexpensive, unfussy meal in a hygienic setting is the Mani’s Dum Biryani outlet in HSR Layout. It’s clean and tidy and half the tables have been blocked off to maintain social distancing. Mani’s does only biryanis – which is a reassuring thing – and has a small selection of starters like Chicken 65 (₹ 249 for 8 pieces) and Paneer Thukda Fry (₹ 249 for 15 pieces). But the biryanis are the main attraction here. I particularly like the Fish Biryani (₹ 329 for the half portion) made with bhetki. The rice, long grain basmati, is cooked well as is the fish, and the spice balance is just right. The half portion is a misnomer, because this is a hearty serving; the ‘regular’ will satisfy gargantuan appetites.
The other biryani I enjoy at Mani’s is the Mutton Biryani (₹ 379 for half portion). Tender mutton and fragrant rice come together in this satisfying meal. It’s proof again of Mani’s focus on sourcing and using good quality ingredients. Also, the biryanis are cooked in small batches on you are assured of a freshly cooked one whatever time of the day you order.
Mani’s also has biryanis in various portion sizes – from single serve D’Lite (starting at ₹ 199) to half, regular, full and large. Plus, there are Family and Bucket Bucket Biryani combos that are excellent value-for-money options when you have to feed a crowd. Mani’s also has a very good Gulab Jamun, made in-house, if you want to finish with a sweet. There are extra discounts when you take away from Mani’s outlets – there are 14 in Bengaluru – and bring you own containers.
