“Thrice as nice” refers to the three times that we dined at and checked out the award-winning, value for money Mamagoto. It also refers to the trio of high-powered, globetrotting gourmets who helped me review it. In fact, India’s pioneering wine writer, music and luxury travel columnist Vinod Advani had dined with me for my very first Mamagoto review eight years ago. And yes, we gave it a glowing review. This time, Vinod invites Consul General of Germany Dr Jurgen Morhard, and his charming wife Petra. Not only is the gracious, Indophile couple hugely popular with Mumbai and Pune’s crème de la crème but having been posted in Hong Kong, they also know their Asian cuisine really well. Mamagoto, Vikhroli, Mumbai Asian Restaurant: Fun Dining
Exuberant, vibrant flavors do the lion dance on our taste buds. Love the fact that Mamagoto gleefully points out that their food is not authentic (they insist they don’t know the word’s meaning); instead, it’s a blend of inspiration from Asian street hawkers, extensive travels and endless mad experimentation secret kitchens located deep within shady alleyways.
Mama’s Thai soul asserts itself through her kaffir lime and Thai basil-infused rich, creamy curries. Try the signature meals in a bowl, like the Chiang Mai Train Station Noodles or experimental food like Fiery Thai Shrimp Fried Rice or order in some dumplings. We loved the unique salads (snowpeas green bean salad with coconut sauce, made crunchy with roasted peanuts). Grilled fish with Asian dressing, garlicky eggplant Robata, basil cups with chatpatta veggies. End with the moist, yummy mud cake, caramel drizzled sponge cake. Khanna, infuse the food and decor. It’s no wonder that Mamagoto is in nine cities now and has won several awards, including the prestigious Times Food Awards. There is a brilliant balance of the sweet, sour, salty and hotly spicy and garlicky in the Pan Asian dishes here. Mama, ensuring all safety protocols, has her finger on the foodie pulse of the Indian diner’s palate and pocket. Affordably priced (average price of dish: Rs. 250-500) and robust, rich flavors, too.
Sure, we know that Mamagoto (means “play with food” and not Mama go to), but we will go to Mama. Again and again!
