Malgudi Mylari Mane, Koramangala 5th Block, Bangalore: About
It was a Friday afternoon and Malgudi Mylari Mane was packed. There were large tables occupied by office workers on their weekly outing and sales teams from five-star hotels in their suits. A group of senior citizens celebrating a birthday and dressed up for the occasion made a heartwarming sight.
It’s a large dining room, with some bamboo basket lampshades and ethnic motifs on the walls providing the aesthetic. It’s all about the food here. That is refreshing given the rash of themed restaurants on the scene that require a press release just to explain the concept.
The friend and I began with the Mutton Chops Dry, and it surpassed any meat dish I’ve eaten in Bengaluru in recent times. The chops were beautifully marinated, tender and with the lightest browning on the surface. I ate mine down to the bone and was loath to put it down.
Then, the signature Mylari Dose. We had both the ghee and pudi versions; though the pudi was tasty, I thought the ghee dose paired better with the curries. We chose the Mutton Meatball Curry and the Malgudi Special Chicken Curry. The meatball curry was a winner; the mince balls were spiced and shaped rustic-style and the green-hued gravy was delicious.
Also on the menu are Ragi Mudde and Thatte Idli, the hearty, everyday staples of Karnataka. We had these with the house Mutton Curry, which was light and yet so flavourful.
Vegetarian options are very limited right now; this is an unapologetic celebration of the state’s mutton repertoire. And we need eateries that do this.
I ate many things because I was on a tasting spree. But a Mylari dose or two and a curry will make a satisfying meal.
The Mutton Pulav here has quite a reputation and I will surely return to taste that.
To end lunch on a sweet note, there was Mysore Pak that had been warmed up to make it soft and yielding.
Malgudi Mylari Mane is highly recommended for food that’s unpretentious, utterly delicious and reflects the food culture of a real place. Be prepared to wait for a table, especially on Fridays and weekends.
