Maia – Eat | Bake | Mom, Bellandur, Bangalore: Decor

While Outer Ring Road, Bellandur, is lined with eateries of every sort, Maia is tucked away deep inside a street leading off this busy stretch, offering respite from the traffic and the noise. It has the luxury of space and spreads over three levels, with an open, outdoor air about it. There’s al fresco seating around an attractive water feature and a herb garden. Low tables and comfy sofas with floral printed cushions and charming paintings of birds add to the eating-in-a-garden feel here.

Maia – Eat | Bake | Mom, Bellandur, Bangalore: Food

Maia, created by the aunt-and nephew team of Sejal and Ishan Shah, sets out to be a showcase for food from home kitchens and the recipes of mothers and grandmothers. So, there’s a distinct non-restaurant feel to the food here. And that’s a good thing. Maia uses fresh ingredients to the extent possible and there’s a noticeable absence of processed foods and pre-made condiments.

I began with a crisp salad that had sliced strawberries and candied walnuts — a perfect dish for a warm afternoon. The Signature Aromatic Kebab is a house speciality, made with a melange of vegetables and scented with saffron and edible camphor. I also tasted the Green Pea Felafel served with a nice hummus. There are other appetizers, such as the Bisibele Arancini and Baingan Bharta Ghanoush. I am not particularly enamoured of such mix-and-match cooking, but I could see the appeal for diners looking for something different.

The Methi Thepla and Undhiyo, in contrast, were traditional classics from the Gujarati kitchen and excellent. As was the Kathal aur Subz ki Biryani, with tender pieces of jackfruit in a remarkably nongreasy biryani. I had a taste also of the Khao Suey, which was pleasant enough, but not exceptional.

For dessert, it was the Chocolate Salted Caramel Pie with a biscuit crumb crust and dark ganache. Maia also does a range of smoothies and shakes, the Popcorn Shake being a signature. It’s rich and creamy and could easily double as dessert. Fine teas from Teabox and good coffee is also available here.

People in and around Bellandur can go here for the vegetarian food that’s cooked with care. The outdoor area appeared prone to flies during the day.
