Madhavrao, Prahlad Nagar, Ahmedabad: DECOR
This restaurant has the look and feel of an aristocratic home in Maharashtra or Goa: carved wooden cabinets, colonial style tropical dining chairs, polished wooden tables, brick-clad walls, wooden partitions with compartments carrying spice and food jars, antiques, artifacts and ornate light fittings. An impressive wooden staircase leads upstairs to the second dining area that is for parties and groups.
Madhavrao, Prahlad Nagar, Ahmedabad: FOOD
Madhavrao offers a good selection of the snacks of Maharashtra, like Sabudana Vada,Vada Pav, Kothimbir Wadi, Dadpe Pohe. Misal (both the Misal Pav which has sprouts in gravy served with bread and the Dahi Misal with curd. They even have a farali Misal), and the pancake-like Thalipith. Most of them are not bad.I ordered the Zunka Bhakhri – the chickpea flour porridge was acceptable, and the millet flat bread, which is thick and rustic as it should be, with fresh white butter and spices on the side. The Bharli Vangi Puri is a substantial one dish meal of stuffed eggplant with puri. Another special dish here is the Bataka Dungli Biscuit Bhakri, which as the name suggests has a crispy flatbread. Another classic Maharashtrian combo, Batata Bhaji-Puri-Shrikhandis also on the menu, and if you like rice they serve Masala Bhaat Tamatar Sar. The Puran Poli is excellent with a nice stuffing and aromatic spices. They also have some Gujarati and Rajasthani mains, and South Indian snacks.
Madhavrao excels in its sweets. The Mohanthal has a melt-in-your-mouth texture and the Topra Pak is also very good.Wash down your meal with their superb Sol Kadhi or smoky Chaas.
