It is no secret that food-related socializing is a source of positive emotion. That this sense of joy would manifest itself in a newly-minted brand is a first for Chandigarh. Lykke (pronounced lookah), one of the newest eateries in town, is named after the Danish word for happiness. This weekend past, I dropped by for lunch to experience just how pertinent the moniker was in relation to their forte–handstretched pizzas, handmade pasta, French pastry, cakes, cookies and chocolates. Multi-grain and sourdough breads, baked daily, can be grabbed off the shelf. Coffee, including cold brews, and gelato, are also specialties at this neat, clean and spacious cafe.

We ordered the Veggie Overload Croissant Sandwich to start with, and then went half-and-half on the wood-fired pizza. We picked Sun-dried Tomatoes & Arugula and Chorizos as our vegetarian and non-vegetarian toppings respectively. We mulled about the pasta options but decided to leave it for another day. For dessert, I was sure the 11-layered Coffee Cake was the one at first glance. My friend zeroed in on fruity Madeleines with a scoop of Blackcurrant Gelato. All of it, washed down with enormous cups of Americano.

The croissant was buttery, delightfully flaky, and toasted to a nice crisp and included mushrooms, aubergines, zucchini, bell peppers and olives as the filling. A good measure of house made mozzarella and herbed ricotta (also made in-house) added to the flavours. The pizza, cooked to near perfection, was chewy, had the smokiness of a rightly charred crust, and the juicy toppings had retained their freshness and texture. The gelato was smooth and quite delicious; the madeleines turned out a tad too sweet for my liking. Good thing I’d saved the coffee cake for my tasty bite. What an absolute treat! Caffeine soaked bites of mousse, chocolate, caramel, praline, ganache, and crunchy wafer-flakes (feuilletine). Sheer lykke.
