The Lotus Oriental has a gorgeous setting by the second floor pool of the Leela Bhartiya City. There is indoor seating, but on a pleasant evening when we were celebrating a birthday, we chose to sit by the water. The breeze was in our faces and there was a backdrop of yellow lights arranged in tidy squares from the high-rises in the vicinity.

We began with the Hotty Tuna Maki, topped off with tobiko, and the Avocado Cream Cheese Maki. The ingredients were top quality and the sushi was expertly rolled. Next, it was dim sum; Edamame Black Truffle which has become an Asian restaurant staple in recent times and Prawn Hargow with a remarkably silken skin. The Pork and Chive Gyoza came under a sort of crisp veil, which was redundant in an otherwise simple and tasty dish of dumplings. After grazing through small plates, there were little bowls of Tom Yum with Prawn. This was a standout dish for me. The clear broth was intensely flavoured – salty, spicy and sour – with the aromas of lemongrass and lime leaf rising up in every spoonful.

We had the New Zealand Lamb Chops from the Asian grills. I try to avoid imported meat, but on the occasions I’m tempted to relent, this is the sort of thing I would want to indulge in. The chops were fabulous with a thin layer of buttery fat and packed with flavour from the marination. We didn’t need the accompanying Tiger Chilli Sauce. For main course, it was the Vietnamese Buttermilk Prawn with rice and some very nice Asian Greens.

The curry tasted perfectly fine, but the consistency was too gloopy for me. We had also some Traditional Hakka Noodles, which just hit the spot. It was street-style and utterly satisfying. The staff provided a birthday cake and that was dessert. Service was attentive and well-paced throughout the meal. I’d recommend the Lotus Oriental for Asian meals – whether it’s elegant fare or the comfort of a wellmade bowl of noodles that you crave.
