As November sets in, Kolkata is grasping every bit of fresh air. The beauty of ushering in November sunsets from the newest rooftops can be an irresistible bait. This week we visit LMNO_Q, the alphabetical skybar experience that is literally ‘up above the world so high’ nestled in the heart of the city’s busy business intersection and entertainment zone.
The enormous glass walled rooftop space with its openness is worth the height – richly detailed interiors; high energy bar, high stool seating, myriad artist installations, a complex grid of hanging birds in flight lead to an open terrace facing the woozy sunset landscape dramatic enough vantage point for any winter rendezvous. The music loud, the buzz louder and the various plush seating areas scattered throughout its sprawling floor creates niches for a younger age group. The evenings spin DJ live sets with the glamourous party crowd clinking glasses and vying for insta space.

Food:

The menu errs in favour of nouvelle comfort food – a mish mash of everything you want or have heard of – partial to vegetarians, with a range of finger food, sharing platters and single
portion mains. We go trapezing in random order, with Sensational somtam (270), Cheese chilli toasties (320), Mumbai style anda bhurji (470), Rajasthani murg parche (490), Crispy Korean chicken ramen bowl ( 420), Healthy kale pesto (430) with added prawns (150), for our late afternoon tête-àtête. A fancy coc-ktail bar curated by the famed Shatbhi Basu and hookah chamber complete the lounge rundown.

Plus & Minus:

The service, fast and friendly, amongst indulgent ceramic crockery and telltale signs of a stylish afternoon, keep the cheeky morsels rolling in. Burst of julienned raw mango and crunchy papaya, in a generous citrusy toss in the Thai som tam salad, lacks the feisty red &bird’s eye chillies and Nam Pla charm of authenticity to our seasoned palates, the cheese mix Toasties is a bit of a meltdown in the garb of light toasted sandwiches with fancy frills of Parmesan crisp, no ripe Cheddar sharpness and the simple Mumbai street-style eggs or anda bhurji, is too casual with a turmeric-happy desi version of scrambled eggs. The boneless marinated grilled chicken kebabs —Rajasthani murg parche — finally bring in a sigh of relief with its spice-fragrant bites. For mains, the trending Ramen, a noodle bowl of soft noodles, served with edamame,sweet corn, bok choy and chilli basted woolly Korean fried chicken in nutty sesame seasoning with its lukewarm pour-in broth and the way too healthy, al dente whole wheat pasta overly doused in plain Jane kale pesto and cheesy parmesan sauce, with added few and far between prawns for goodness sake, pose to be great showmakers. There’s no space left for desserts.
