Lazeez Affaire, Chanakyapuri, New Delhi: DECOR

A location on the Outer Circle of a not very busy block promises to have easy parking, especially in the evenings. The ground floor windows are enormous, the overhead ceiling decoration is eye-catching, to say the least and the first floor is where the bar and the washrooms are located. Hugely successful restaurateur Priyank Sukhija has chosen to make this second branch of his very first restaurant funky in its decor, a departure from the classic look of the original.Hence, most of the seating is suitable for the young and energetic, and it is only the endless seating along one wall that has sofas with padded back rests. The plates and serving dishes are memorable to say the least: all the plates have a black and white image of a woman’s face on them, which makes for unusual food photography!

Lazeez Affaire, Chanakyapuri, New Delhi: FOOD

This is where the restaurant needs to take greater care of what comes out of their kitchen. Galouti kebab (Rs. 515 for 4 pieces on taftan) was good except or the amount of potli masala which sears one’s palate. Next up was hing dal tadka (Rs. 355). I love the scent of asafoetida and have always considered it my favorite spice. I wasn’t even aware that there was such a thing as too much hing, but I finally met my nemesis: the dal was overflowing with hing that had been improperly fried and was, consequently, bitter and over powering. Ah well, I thought. My next dish will be a no-brainer. Murg makhani is difficult to get wrong, when your other restaurant has been serving it for decades. Well, this one lacked any hint of freshness or natural sweetness of tomatoes. It had a tinned appeal, perhaps with the too generous addition of dried fenugreek powder. Butter chicken is as popular as it is in our city because of the rich, creamy dairy hit, but this version lacked the umami richness. The last dish of my meal bheja masala had kept large chunks of lamb brain whole, just the way we brain aficionados love it, but the tomato-onion masala appeared not to have been cooked through because of the tell tale indigestion.

Lazeez Affaire, Chanakyapuri, New Delhi: PLUS AND MINUS

The younger generation dislike eating Indian food outside the home. Perhaps this is why: a yawning mismatch between food and decor.
