Summer is here. Doesn’t spending an evening outdoors,the wind in your face and watching the sun go down,seem like a most pleasant prospect? Layla at The Den hotel in Whitefield allows you to indulge in this experience. This rooftop venue has a sleekly done up indoor space, but I recommend the al fresco deck. It affords lovely views of Whitefield by night. Seating is on comfortable, low sofas, plus gazebos that invite you to stretch out and lounge.
I rate high the bartending skills of the Layla team. Drinks include a luxury range of cocktails such as Treasure – JW Gold Label, Martini Rosso, passion fruit, lime – (₹1,299), zero calorie concoctions, long drinks and sparkling cocktails. Order a tall, cold, heady drink, find a gazebo, watch a sunset and see the stars come out.
It is a compact menu here, but no one should complain about ‘no choice’. When I see small menus I’m reassured the food will be fresh and dishes cooked well. At Layla, begin with the cold Mezze. My favorites from the selection are the Roasted Eggplant (₹399), made silken and rich with brown butter, and the cool,creamy Tzatziki (₹399). Scoop these up with warm pita. The Shrimp Falafel (₹499) is a tasty pick from the hot Mezze.
For mains, I almost always order the Fish Tagine (₹899), fish balls simmered with olives and chick peas and the slightest hint of red chilli. It pairs so well with the Pilaf (₹299), buttery and nut-studded. The Braised Lamb Shank (₹1399), the meat tender and the sauce acquiring a pleasing sweetness from dried apricots, is also a recommended main course, especially when you want something hearty and robust. For a lighter meal, the Shakshuka (₹699), acquiring sharpness with a scattering feta is the perfect thing. Vegetarians have a list of dishes that are guaranteed to satisfy. There’s Manti (₹699), Agnolotti (₹699), stuffed with ricotta and spinach in sage butter and perfectly executed Pumpkin Lasagna (₹699).
For dessert, the Knafeh (₹399) is a popular order, but if you want a cooling sweet for summer, the Goat Milk Panna Cotta (₹399) does the job. Layla, then, is just right for an evening in a wonderful setting with food and drink to complement.
