Laughing Llama Gastropub, Brigade Road, Bangalore: Decor
Enter through the yellow door and everything about the place shouts ‘for young people’. Yellow lines and hanging bulbs brighten the space, with stuffed llamas for decor. There’s an open air space for smokers.
Laughing Llama Gastropub, Brigade Road, Bangalore: Food
The menu is peppered with so many puns and funny names -Strip Cheese, Put a Ring on It (onion rings), You Got Porked (pepperoni pizza) – it could make you wince or be amused, depending on your taste for ‘clever’ menu writing. Clearly, the clientele loves it.
I began with the BBC, a warm salad of babycorn and broccoli. The vegetables were crunchy and the dressing had a sharp lemon tang. It was supposed to be topped with cheddar that looked more like processed cheese. Then, the Meat Mary, a line-up of crumbed mince balls on a stick, sitting on Bloody Mary in shot glasses. It was all meat, well complemented by the spicy drink.
I had also a taste of the Prawn Malabar Roll. The paratha was a tad chewy, but there was a generous amount of filling. The prawns and the Kerala spiced gravy in which they were coated were very good, making for a hearty, satisfying snack.
For main course, I ordered the vegetarian Khow Suey — there’s also a chicken version. It was a tent card special combo which came with a beer or mocktail. I wouldn’t rate it high on authenticity, but it was a large, comforting bowl of noodles, coconut curry and crunchy vegetables with toppings of peanuts, fried onion, lemon wedges etc on the side.
Laughing Llama Gastropub, Brigade Road, Bangalore: Service
There’s a note at the end of the menu that requests customers to wait 20 minutes for their orders to arrive as the food is prepared fresh. The waiters are a friendly, efficient bunch.
Laughing Llama Gastropub, Brigade Road, Bangalore: Plus & Minus
Surrounded as it is by colleges, this seems like an ideal student hangout with food that’s fun and pretty tasty. I did, though, find the prices slightly high for the setting.
