Lady Baga, Lavelle Road, Bangalore: DECOR
The place, as you would have gathered from the name, draws its inspiration from Goa, specifically the beach shacks that are an essential aspect of the holiday experience there. Spread across two levels — one air-conditioned, the other not — Lady Baga has sand, rain showers to create the sound of water, pop art reminiscent of the hippie era and even a store that evokes a flea market buzz. It all comes together to make a setting that invites you to kick back and relax, imagining yourself on some Goan beach, even if it’s Lavelle Road that your looking out on to.
Lady Baga, Lavelle Road, Bangalore: FOOD
Lady Baga has quickly become a popular watering hole for the cool set, and the bar is well-stocked. Signature cocktails include Bloody Marianna, which uses chorizo-infused vodka, and Ginger Man, concocted with ginger, scotch and tamarind juice, for a Goan twist.
When it’s in season, order the Bombil, crisp-fried to go with your beer or sangria. The Sungta Maria — masala prawns on rounds of fried bread — is another typical shack dish Lady Baga does very well. The Kara Chilli Fry — tender strips of buff meat tossed with onions and capsicum should be a hit with meat lovers.

I’ve had several meals here and when I can’t decide what to eat, it’s always the Seafood Thali at lunch time. It’s an earthy, satisfying meal with fried fish, silken fish curry, vegetables and papad, served with chapatis and rice. If you want to eat just one curry, then it should be Chef Aloo’s Prawn Curry, which is a perfect blend of hot and sour, with the creaminess of coconut and fresh seafood. Eat this with the fabulous Chilli Coconut Rice.
When I’m in the mood for comfort food, I’ve had the plain-sounding Bangers & Mash, which is, in fact, a platter of juicy pork sausages, a generous mound of fluffy mashed potato and rich, brown gravy. I would also recommend the Clam & Bacon Risotto topped with prawn balchao, the creamy mass inflected with intense salty, smoky bits.
For dessert, there’s the Portuguese Serradura — layers of cream, toffee sauce and biscuit crumbs. This one being a little too rich for my taste, I would settle for Gram’s Bread & Butter Pudding. There’s something to be said for an honest, old-fashioned pudding, right?
