Kovallam is a vegetarian South Indian restaurant. Named for the famous beach in Kerala, it offers good of that and other states of Southern India.
Kovallam, C G Road, Ahmedabad: Decor
The signage and replica of South Indian carvings make it obvious that Kovallam is a South Indian restaurant. Located in a converted house, it is set behind a small garden where the owners are setting up a cafe. Inside, the large glass windows bring in views of the garden. A few pieces of dark wooden furniture lend South Indian accents to the otherwise contemporary decor. White, cream and greens dominate the interiors. The restaurant has two dining areas flanking the entrance gallery which has a waiting area with rustic half-log stools and a wooden book rack. The tables are well spaced out.
Kovallam, C G Road, Ahmedabad: Food
Kovallam expectedly has Kerala dishes on its menu. I ordered appam which had a lovely soft center with lacy edges, with the coconut milk white stew well-filled with vegetables and the spicier greenish colored Kovallam special stew. The layered Malabar paratha with vegetable kurmaand poriyalwas also tasty.
Apart from the usual idlis, dosas and uttapams, they also have their own signature versions of these dishes. I tried the podi idli, with a coarse chilly and spice power which was fairly good. However, the accompanying sambar I got with it was bland and lacking the punch of tamarind and spices. The menu also has South Indian thali and rice dishes. I ended with Kovalam’s Chirag, a rich coconut halwa.
Kovallam, C G Road, Ahmedabad: Plus & Minus
