KA 01, Richmond Road, Bangalore: Decor
This is a rooftop space at the downtown Ibis. The quirkiness of the name – it’s the Bangalore Central vehicle registration number extends to the decor. There are two remodeled vans, one dispensing drinks, the other serving as a live counter for food. Colorful cushions brighten up comfortable, low sofas; there are also high tables for large groups. This breezy deck is open only in the evening.
KA 01, Richmond Road, Bangalore: Food
The drinks from the colorful bar are also named after registration numbers. My KA05 – Nelamangla was Old Monk and masala Thums Up, an earthy combination you can’t go wrong with. The dishes on the menu are all inspired by street food from across the country, served with little twists here. Some evoke the places of their origin, others are less authentic. Still, full marks to the chef for veering away from low-hanging bar foods to come up with this menu.
To enable grazing, there are half plates and quarter plates. I enjoyed my vegetarian dishes – Ghee Roast Arbi and Dahi ke Pithore, tikkis made of besan and dahi, topped off with tangy chutneys. The Prawn Thokku, prawns in a spicy masala, comes on prawn crisps and the Chicken Chintamani, rather dry, is served on nippat biscuits. The style of seafood or meat, cooked in different ways but served on breads or crisps of some sort repeats itself too often on the menu, and takes some of the excitement away.
It’s all small plates here, but for something slightly substantial, there’s the Goan Sausage Bread, juicy chorizo in a warm, crusty charcoal poie. The banana leaf wrapped Bhetki Paturi, served with rice, is also good.
KA 01, Richmond Road, Bangalore: Service
Service is warm and welcoming. Be prepared to wait for some dishes, especially when the place is packed.
Plus & Minus:
This place works well for after-office drinks. While I was there, there was the annoying sound of construction at an adjacent site.
