JZ Lake View is a restaurant, lounge and bar all rolled into one. It is located by the picturesque Manas lake in Bhugaon, on the outskirts of Pune.

JZ is sprawled across 3 acres of land that includes the restaurant, bar, lounge along with open lawns and a banquet hall. The bar and lounge are housed in the indoor section that has fulllength glass windows with a view of the outdoor section and the lake. Everything here is super-sized. The large accent chairs and loungey leather sofas with cushions make the seating extremely comfortable. They have used a lot of bold and contrasting colours in the decor elements which are suitable for the bar and lounge setting. The outdoor section overlooks the lake and has a variety of seating areas. The central lawn area has faux wicker patio furniture with a mix of tables suitable for groups along with private two-seater tables covered with a dome. They have space for live gigs and performances here. The farthermost area is closest to the lake and is partially covered with a pergola and decorated with white hanging flowers. This is perfect for a late evening romantic date.

While the space is beautiful and the ambience is great, particularly in the evenings, they can definitely do away with some artificial decor elements.

This week, I visited JZ over lunch and chose to sit indoors and picked a table by the window with the lake view. The place launched in 2019 with an elaborate well-curated multi-cuisine menu. After a brief hiatus, they reopened a few weeks back with a limited menu that features their top-selling and most popular dishes from the original menu.

The current, temporary menu is mostly North Indian with some pan-Asian dishes. I just wish, they had run a spellcheck before printing the menu. After a round of refreshing white wine sangrias, we ordered the appetizers. The stuffed tandoori mushrooms were a great start to our meal. The mushrooms were brimming with a tasty stuffing and were grilled perfectly. The mutton ghee roast got us slightly confused as it resembled a mutton sukkha which was also on the menu. The mutton was well-cooked and tender and the onion and coconut masala was delicious, but a ghee roast it was not. Our server recommended the quirky-named and extremely tasty cha chu prawns. Batter fried prawns tossed with burnt garlic, spring onions and lots of fried chillies, this dish was cracking. For the past few weeks, I seem to be on a winning streak when it comes to butter chicken at restaurants. The butter chicken at JZ was really good. It was creamy, slightly and rightly sweet and the chicken pieces were grilled and generous. The vegetarians in our group were extremely happy with the veg Thai red curry which was filled with veggies. The coconut milk-based curry was creamy and subtle. Dessert options were limited and we picked the safe and always dependable sizzling brownie with ice cream.

Plus & Minus:

I am keen to visit the place again in the evening over dinner and pick a table closer to the lake. I am sure the place will have a completely different feel when all the different lights are turned on. The food was great and the staff was friendly and courteous.
