Hunan Square, Electronic City, Bangalore: Overview

Hunan Square is in Electronic City, catering to the office-goers and apartment-dwellers there. It’s on a bustling street, tucked away into a shopping complex. Inside, much effort has gone into creating walls and screens decorated with Chinese script and shelves holding Oriental décor pieces.

The menu is a crowd-pleaser, designed for this particular market. The vegetarian choices are many, with paneer being flown down from Delhi to be tossed in hot garlic, Hunan, ‘white’, Sichuan, Singapore or black bean sauce. Meats other than chicken are eschewed, keeping in mind the sentiments of those who dine here.

To begin with, I had a refreshing Som Tam, the shredded papaya enlivened with slivers of raw mango. The dressing was zesty and flavourful. I tast ed also the Tofu in Hot Garlic Sauce, which had a spicy kick to it. The Oyster Chicken Dim Sum had a hint of sourness and I was unsure if that was how it was meant to be.

The best dish of the evening for me was the Prawn Tempura. The prawns were juicy and the batter coating, more seasoned than is usual, was crisp. The batter-fried fan of noodles that garnished the platter was redundant.

I was encouraged to try the paneer dishes, one of the top-selling items here. There was a Cilantro Paneer and a Leefu version. The first was a bright red and spicy, the second a vivid green. The paneer was creamy and soft, but didn’t really work for me in combination with these sauces. I believe paneer finds its happiest pairing with makhni gravy.

We rounded off our meal with some fried rice. I tried both the Classic and the Hibachi. The former was done just right and needed only a drizzle of chilli oil to make a most satisfying dinner. The Hibachi, with mushroom and chicken, and pleasing smokiness was nicely done, too.

Hunan serves its location well. And if you are not too hung up on authenticity you can eat quite happily here.
