Tucked away in a tiny side street of Kolkata is a speck of perfect wintry London. The starkly bland ivy façade with frilly awning show windows remind us of pubs in Oxford Street and Piccadilly, unfurling the dainty pink interiors with subdued golden hues, classic tiled flooring, running wall mounted high stool window seats, and a splattering of ruby jewel specks of bucket seats, extended to a laze-in-the-sun afternoon friendly outdoorsy rattan setting for your sunning pleasure. Oh yeah, add to that entertainment and pampering for your furry friends making it the highlight, apart from your coffee dedication.

Hugo & Finn, the minimalistic modern day cafeteria has taken a significant leap into the future from erstwhile London’s eternal love of coffee houses, featuring newspapers to read, crossword puzzles to crack and debates to pursue into an animated high street coffee shop.

Call it a bistro, a trattoria or ubiquitous café, the menu serves as the perks of the coffee. In this case, tea as well. And a save-your-life hot chocolate. While the coffee, both hot and cold is genuinely the queen of the menu; and maybe half or more of the cost of the tech establishment, it justifies with the hot aromatic straight ups, the pour overs, the flavoured blends and the cold brews. The eats are connoisseurs’ pairing to suit all moods from wooly dull grey mornings to flashy dancing purple evenings! We order a Brie, Bocconcini pesto cherry tomato caprese salad (₹595), Ham and cheese croissant (₹295), Avocado & feta smash on toasted rye (₹425), Smoked salmon bagel with herbed scrambled eggs (₹445) and Loaded fruit muffin (₹375) to accompany our plain Jane cold brew (₹225) and heartwarming Hot chocolate (₹265), on our afterwork evening rendezvous.

Plus & Minus:

The devilish hot chocolate kickstarts the party, it’s luscious richness runs in the veins to warm up the winter nip. The food rolls out a conceivable taste line-up, pulling out all epicurean stops from the in-house bakery – mixing and kneading, folding and scaling, benching and baking adding crusty freshness straight to the palate.

The avocado is the season’s recherché vegetable, mashed on toasted rye bread slices, pleasingly so with dust of feta crumble and a hint of spicy aftertaste. The delectable classic combination of chewy New York bagel, with the exquisite melting silken flesh of Norwegian salmon and gooey herbed scrambled eggs, served with the seductive hint of truffle oil is best eaten messily. And the fragile intensity of the warm ham and cream cheese layering between the oomphish croissant, too delicate to travel distances is the epitome of a winter evening. Our house-crafted, slowly steeped, chilled over ice cold brew is smoother and milder, well rounded in a whisky tumbler, less harsh and soothing. The salad arrives last on the queue, a bit wimpy, toss up of tarty baby cherry tomatoes, juliennes of Brie, the poor li’l baby Bocconcini cut into halves mercilessly and doused in a creamy pesto dressing, with sundried tomatoes for tweak, heaped on the tiny toasted sourdough, which we would have preferred on the side anyday. Finally, cannot resist a savvy fruit muffin for dessert, massive and loaded with cream between kiwi, dragonfruit and green apple astringency and sweetness, laced with cinnamon, for a stellar finish.
